2 police officers were ambushed overnight in southern Indiana, both are in critical condition but stable, asking that all have them and their families in your thoughts and prayers.

    Thanks

They have my prayers and throwing good thoughts their way.

Do we know what happened yet?

Fox 59, said that they hadn't caught the two men yet but they do know who they are. Apparently the officers were responding to a suspicious person call at the motel 6 and when they were approaching a room the shooters opened fire on them, one officer was hit in the leg and the other in an area not covered by his vest. They were able to get back to their cars and call for help.

Two Hoosier cops seriously wounded in hotel ambush

    THE ASSOCIATED PRESS • February 20, 2009

JEFFERSONVILLE, Ind. — Two police officers were seriously wounded Thursday in an ambush at a southern Indiana motel, setting off a multistate manhunt for two men police described as "extremely armed and dangerous."

The Jeffersonville officers underwent surgery at University Hospital in nearby Louisville, Ky. Both were listed in critical condition early Friday.
Hospital spokesman David McArthur identified the officers as 39-year-old Cpl. Dan Lawhorn and 32-year-old Patrolman Keith Broady. Broady was shot in the chest in an area not protected by his bulletproof vest, while Lawhorn was shot in the right leg, Jeffersonville Detective Todd Hollis said.

Lawhorn has been on the force for 11 years. Broady has been a member for 4½ years and has two brothers in law enforcement, according to Hollis.

Police identified the suspects as 22-year-old Vincent D. Windell Jr., who has an address in New Albany, and 37-year-old Robert Datillo of Jeffersonville. Windell was believed to be driving a 2004 green Ford ZX2, and police were searching for the men in Indiana and Kentucky.

Hollis said both suspects are believed to have been involved in the shootings.

Indiana State Police Sgt. Jerry Goodin said Lawhorn and Broady were responding to a report of suspicious activity at the Motel 6 off Interstate 65 about 6:35 p.m. when they were ambushed as they approached the room. Hollis said at least one of the officers returned fire, but it was unclear whether anyone was struck.

The officers were able to get back to their vehicles and report the shooting, Hollis said. Both were conscious when they arrived at the hospital.

Hollis said police found drugs in the second-floor hotel room. About eight SWAT officers went through the Motel 6 room by room and then began searching another nearby motel, but both suspects were still at large early Friday.

Police urged residents to take caution.

"This man fired on two police officers ... so he may be at a place or state of mind where he has nothing to lose," Hollis said.

A witness told WHAS-TV in Louisville he saw one of the suspects standing in the middle of the road after the shooting.

"He was screaming and hollering and yelling, he said he shot a cop, and kicked at the car when we drove by," said witness Terry French.

About 70 people stood vigil at the hospital early Friday, including several officers in uniform, five chaplains and the widows of some slain police officers. More than a dozen police cars were parked outside.

Jeffersonville Police Col. Timothy S. Deeringer said more than 100 people had visited to check on the officers.

"You never want to think this could happen," Deeringer said. "You know it can. You know the reality's there. It does happen and you never know when it's going to strike."

The shooting had similarities to a June 2007 incident in nearby Georgetown. In that case, Floyd County sheriff's Deputy Frank Denzinger died when he and his partner were ambushed by a 15-year-old boy while responding to a domestic disturbance. Denzinger's partner survived his injuries. The boy later killed himself.

Denzinger's widow was among those who visited the hospital after Thursday's shooting.

Prayers out. If anyone can think of a way INGO can help these officers or show support let me know.
Something as simple as a card expressing support and offering prayers for the 2 officers and their families from INGO members mailed to the Jeffersonville PD would be good I think.
