Was reading a Backwoodsman mag. article about roundball loads in a mosin w/ a .32 chamber insert, and got ta' thinkin- picked up some .310 dia balls, put 'em in a 30-30 case over .3cc's of red dot. Wow! 3 shots touching at 25 yds, about 3/4 inch penetration in a 2x4. With .5cc's of powder, blows a big hole out the back of the 2x4. Gonna be fun!

That is interesting. I just ordered my .30-30 dies and will begin loading soon. I also have some 310 balls that I keep for my .32 cal muzzle loader. Three touching at 25 yards? Wow. Intriguing.

I remember reading an article when I was growing up that discussed round ball loads in 30--06, and 30-30. I cannot remember the powders used, but I know that the idea of a squirrel rifle load was in there as well. I think the article was in American Rifleman.

I have that article bookmarked in another browser - let me see if I can find it. It had a lot of really interesting loads for the .30-06. It'll be a bit out of date, though, because I think this was pre-Trailboss. I think the primary powder for reduced loads was either unique or 2400.
