Why am I getting a bucnh of Twitter followers that I don't know?

I follow a small number of people, but never tweet. I have made exactly one tweet in the past couple of years.

Now all day long today, people I do not know have started following me. WTH?

I notice that all of my mysterious new followers have zero tweets. There is something weird going on but I don't know what it is. Somebody 'splain it to me, please.

Depends on the content of your tweet. Lots of people search for keywords in Twitter. Also, if you've linked your Twitter account on any public sites, bots may jump on and follow you hoping you'll return the favor!

I don't use it much, but on my twitter I have it set so that people have to ask to follow me. I don't OK anyone whom I don't know.

Typical Twitter spam bots.

Change your settings to allow only your approved friends to follow you. You will still get the annoying "add me as a friend" requests but people you don't know won't be able to see your tweets.
