Well I am thinking about getting into something in .308. I'm really not sure what I will use it for.

I'm down in Alabama for the next year and looking at hunting regs I can hunt hogs and deer with rifles so this may be a possibility.

Will mostly be used for range trips etc.

What would INGO recommend? I'm open to suggestions...I am guessing will need some glass to put on it as well. I'm looking at bolt action options as well as semi-auto options.

If you give an idea, please include a rough idea of cost (for setup gun, scope, rings, accessories).

Also, I don't really have any larger bore rifles, I have a Mosin but its more of just a fun gun that I wouldn't hunt with. Do you have a recommendation of another caliber or setup?

It may be a long shot but budget would be under $1000, $1500 TOPS if the package was right.

I have 308 win. in semi & bolt guns, In a bolt gun you can hunt & snipe with, in semi-auto it's good to know you'll have a 20 round mag & it will go thur most bullet proof vest

With your budget, I'd go for a bolt gun.

    Remington 700 SPS - $555 at buds
    SWFA 10x42 Mil-dot - $300 at SWFA
Burris Xtreme Tac mount & rings ~ $80 at SWFA

~ $1000 after fees and shipping. Add a sling and you're good to go.

    Savage 10FP ($607) or Remington 700 Tactical ($596)

Weaver Extended Multi-Slot 20MOA scope base: $32.35 from Amazon
Burris XTR 1" low rings: $48 + shipping from Midway
    Bushnell 3200 Tactical 10x40 mil/mil scope: $200 + shipping from Midway

Should have you under budget enough for a sling, bipod, and/or couple boxes of ammo

Alternately, for a lighter weight, lower cost option:

    Stevens 200 ($315 from Bud's)
Nikon Prostaff 4-12x40 ($150 from Midway)
Burris Signature Zee 1" Medium Rings ($34 from Midway)
Burris 2 piece XTR base ($23 from Midway)

Ready to hunt for under $600...though I'd recommend a Rifle Basix SAV-1 trigger ($85 from Shooters Discount) and a Boyd Ross FT thumbhole stock ($100 from Boyds) to round it out into a very nice, sub-$800 package.

man i dont know hoow i missed this thread. i voted for a bolt action, mainly because i just love bolt actions. there is nothing wrong with a semi auto and i think your picking the right caliber.

as far as rifles i just bought a savage 10fpsr a few weeks ago in 308 and am very pleased for only having 100 rds threw it. but i wouldn't really recomend it for a walking hunting rifle due to weight. for a stand hunting rifle it would be fine. you can also save a few bucks by not getting it threaded from the factory. it ran me about 600 bucks

that leaves 400-900 for a scope, rings and base. i dont think you need to go up to 900 but their are a ton on varibles that go into it.

send me a pm, give me a call (765)580-0986 or shoot me a pm and we will talk about what scope is best for your individual needs and price range.

I picked up a new in the box Stevens 200 in .308 for $75 and a DeWalt router I had for 10 years!
One day I plan to deck this puppy out, but for now it's a hunting basic rifle!

I have a bolt action pistol in .308 (left-handed bolt no less)

It's not too good for extremely long range, but it does have a 14" barrel so for a handgun it will reach out and touch something.

Kicks like a freakin' mule though!
