Yep, in another month we'll revisit the wailing and gnashing of teeth over a government shut down or reduction in Federal spending.

The credit card has hit the limit. What to do?

They have to start working on the FY 2012 budget, pretty soon, and the debt ceiling is going to the be pre-cursor to the budget battle.

I don't expect much of a fight on the debt ceiling. The Republicans will get a few token cuts and then they'll raise it. This compromise was the line in the sand until the next cycle. The Republicans found out, most likely through their internal polling that their voters wouldn't support a shutdown. Unless something changes, this one is done, at least until we add more seats and hopefull a President.

Kind of puts it in perspective, doesn't it? Personally, I thinks it's unacceptable, ...no DANGEROUS, for the federal government to have "discretionary spending". If it isn't specifically mandated for them in the Constitution, they shouldn't be doing it.

These charts should be posted on every election ballot and voting device. Not that it would help......but it might.

    Nice post.

As George Bush famously said, "We need to make the pie higher," which even though was a verbal mistake on his part, he was technically correct.

Discretionary spending doesn't mean what it sounds like it means. That spending may or may not be Constitutional (in fact, I don't see how much of the mandatory spending is Constitutional). Discretionary spending is where all the operating budgets come from, much of which is perfectly Constitutional.
