Requirements for Illinois FOID card?

Anybody familiar with the process for getting the Illinois FOID card? I am being turned to for advice from a friend.

Fees involved?
Required citizenship?
Shall issue?
Lengthy process?

Anything else?

FOID Card Application

If you arent an Illinois resident you cannot get one unless you are required to for your job.

Ie You work as a armed security guard or cop in Illinois and you need one for your job.

The ISP will require a dept letterhead to prove that you need one and if you terminate your employment for whatever reason ISP requires you to send it back to them.


The fee is 10.00

The FOID does NOT allow you to carry a weapon in Illinois as a citizen. No private citizen in Illinois can carry a weapon.

As an armed security guard you are only allowed to carry to and from work. You are only allowed one hour to and from work with NO stops in between.


You get caught stopping or take more than that hour and you can be charged with a UUW. Unlawful use of a weapon (class 4 felony).

Make sure your tank is full. God forbid you stop for gas and your gun jumps off your hip and robs the place.

It is also a photo ID, so you need the proper sized picture of your mug for the application. It's not difficult to get, just a little time consuming to get, but I think that was on purpose, you know, to discourage people.

WOW what a communist state!, so they're saying that gun ownership is a privaledge?(spelling?) not a right,....BS with a capital BULL!

Make sure your photo is exactly the right size and shoulders and up only. The Il police rejected my application the first time because the photo was a cm to big.
