Not all legal "experts" agree on the 14th Amendment solution. This CNN article offers a couple of other options. IF Obama wanted to be a leader, according to at least one constitutional law professor, he could extend the debt ceiling on his own. He could also voluntarily cut current spending and simply allow the Bush era tax cuts to expire next year.
He could then take it to the people and say something like: "I've given Congress the opportunity to deal with this situation, but now somebody has to take charge and run the country."
Not sure if SCOTUS would ever hear the case. This professor and others have stated that it would be difficult finding someone with standing to contest the action. Senate would never convict him in an impeachment.
