Muzzleloading Pistol

Does anyone have or ever had a Muzzleloading pistol kit? i think there pretty neat and have thought about getting one for several years.....i doubt u can do really any hunting for anything with it, but i think it would be fun to shoot one.

I have a CVA .45 muzzle loading pistol i built from a kit. I haven't fired it yet but I hope I get a chance to soon.

Sure you can hunt w/a muzzleloading handgun, why not?

Small game, no problem.

For deer, in Indiana, a muzzle loading handgun has to be of least .50 cal and have a barrel 12" or longer (per DNR requirements). Meet those specs and you're good to go for deer too.

A Howda is pretty high on my list. I'm just left wishing it where a cartridge gun instead of BP.

I don't have any BP pistols, but I build my own flintlock longrifles. After I build a few more longrifles, I plan on making a pistol for myself.

i've got two cap&ball CVA kit builds my grandfather left me when he passed. i've never shot them. this sounds like the beginnings of an INGO event!

what brands are out there that have pistols with at least a 12" barrel and is .50 cal or bigger?

Traditions used to have a Buckhunter pistol, but I don't know whether they still make it or not (maybe could find one used).

There are some smooth bores around, but they'd be fairly short range affairs:

Model 1780 British Sea Service Pistol, .62 caliber 12" barrel, brass trim, belt hook, near new, type used by Russell Crowe in the movie Master & Commander - Far Side of the World
British Dragoon Pistol, 1720 - 1760 era, .62 smooth bored 12" barrel, near new, unfired, with correct markings

It wouldn't be all that difficult to make one, by chopping down a muzzleloading long gun.

For kits check out Dixie gun works. I bought a Hawkin pistol kit but have not assembled. It is made in waldron in. If you have a build party check into Mike Miller,rifle maker, met him at spring shoot in Friendship great guy.

They are alot of fun and alot of work. Just take cleaning a muzzleloader times 5 or 6. I have taken one hunting as a back up during muzzleloader but never had the close range encounter to use it.
