got it as a fact of the day in my Daily Events email (by HumanEvents.com daily news letter). Did some more research and there is contested evidence that the Pope banned the crossbow. Second Council of the Lateran - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Thought it was a cool fact. The publishers might have taken a little liberty with the story to make it more exciting...
