Was listening to the radio the other day and heard that the Civilian Air Patrol was looking for volunteers here in the Bloomington area. I've had an Introduction to Search and Rescue class and some members of the CAP helped out. I thought about checking it out and seeing what was involved. Might be a nice way to get some training in exchage for volunteering to go look for black boxes.

It's Civil Air Patrol (not Civilian), and it's a fantastic program. I was in it for 4 years. How old are you though? It's designed as a youth program, and if you're 18+ (and I would think you are to be on this site), you'll have to be Senior Member rather than a cadet, which means you'll mostly do admin work. But yes, you can join the Ground Team and respond to downed aircraft (CAP usually beats the emergency services to the scene). And you may not mind helping to run your local squadron if you appreciate the program.
Whoops! Sorry about the misnomer there. I'm just north of 40, didn't realize that it was more of a youth program. If I got involved, I guess that I'd rather be a ground pounder. I still might check into it, the Civil Air Patrol, that is. Thanks for the experience info. I sorta knew one of the guys in the CAP, and it seemed like they knew their stuff.
