I am going to spend Thanksgiving with my daughter and her family in Northern Illinois. It is my understanding that I can carry while driving, however, must leave the firearm in the vehicle if I exit it for any reason. Am I correct in my thinking?

You are correct. The gun must also be out of sight and either the vehicle locked or in a locked case iirc. Also when you get to your daughters house you can carry there if you have her permission. You can also unload the firearm and put it in a case and take it with you when you get out of the vehicle. Or at least you could and I don't believe the new law changed that, but it is possible that it did.

I did the vehicle carry in Illinois for the first time this morning. I have a hoslter mounted under the steering wheel on the kick panel. I know its legal, but it still felt very strange.

If you can park in the driveway or ON the property at the daughter's house, you wouldn't have to take the gun off when you get out, as private property is GTG. Just don't leave the property with the gun.

    Good advice here.

And the irony that non-residents may carry in their vehicles when I as a resident can't (aren't supposed to) isn't lost upon me.

I carried to St. Charles, Missouri and back a couple of weeks ago with no issue. They still don't allow carry where it is needed most, rest areas, fuel stops, East St. Louis, etc., but they are coming around.

I have been carrying on my person when driving in IL occasionally and one is always in my vehicle since the law change. Oh wait, I have done that for 20 years. :)

I leave mine in the center console always.

I'm still unclear as to the "duty to inform" as to whether or not i must disclose to Illinois LEO if I ever get stopped. Don't ask, don't tell seems to be the best policy.

Especially in Illinois, where some LEO don't seem to know (or care about) the CCW law but would rather just haul you off to jail and let the judge decide, even more so in the city of Chicago.

I went over to central IL for Thanksgiving and I had no problems carrying, but I also didnt get pulled over. ;) The irony is that I became an IN resident earlier this year and was born and raised in IL, I even still have my FOID card....to wipe my arse with. I can legally carry in my vehicle but an IL resident cannot, YET. God Im glad I am no longer a resident of that F'd up state!

So if you are stay in a hotel in the state of Illinois, the gun must stay in the car lock? If you remove it in order to secure it inside your personal room you are now in violation?

Beezer: You would be required to unload your gun and case it in something (box, bag, etc.) before stepping out of your car.

Once you're in your room, you could reload.

That's how one is "supposed" to do it.

Ah, gotta love these Illinois laws.

It's a small price to pay to keep Chicago crime free.

I am going to a company Christmas party tomorrow which unfortunately requires me to go to Kankakee Illinois. If I have read everythin here correctly, I believe I am ok carrying in the car while driving. If I get out of the car for whatever reason it has to be stored in the vehicle out of sight with the vehicle locked. I can carry it unloaded in my bag going into the hotel and I can reload once in my room. Is this correct?

That is correct. See how easy it is. Jim.
