I have been kicking around the idea of buying a thermal monocular. I know zero, nada, zip about them. Does anyone here know anything about them. In particular the 1k ish price point. Waste of money, good? I would want at least several hundred yards of detection range.

$1,000 will get you junk. You would get your several hundred yard detection, but you would have no idea what you're detecting. Look for a 384 core 35mm lense minimum.

Wow! The price difference between what few I had looked at and the ones that meet those specs is a fairly wide gap. What is the saying? Something like pay once cry once?

They are expensive. Mine now sells for $12,000 on a good day. I think it was 8500 when purchased . IM me the specs and I'll give you my thoughts.

AA Optics has a couple of the Berings on clearance.
I will check those out. I guess I should clarify my purpose, other than I want one, for wanting to buy one. Looking around my woods and pasture and, since this is the survival section, I think it would be good to have something that works in complete darkness so I can see who is in my yard, lane, barn etc.

Look at a Hogster-r and the super hogster. Both are actual scopes, but you can turn the reticle off. Also, both have good quick connect mounts that hold zero if you want to slap it on a rifle.

I was actually just looking at that very scope. Do you have any issues using it as a monocular? It does seem handy to have something I can quick on and off a rifle.

No problem at all. I actually use the quick mount and a piticanny mount to secure it to a lanyard when I'm using it as a monocular. That way I don't have to worry about dropping it.

I was in your boat last year. I bought this one: https://www.atncorp.com/thermal-monocular-ots-xlt-160-2-5-10x

It's OK. I was able to see a doe giving birth to a fawn at 100 yards last spring in complete dark. I didn't want to spend a ton, but wanted "some" capability. The 2.5 minimum power gives it better clarity at distance, but is hard for anything in the 30 yard range or closer due to the magnification and small field of view.

I felt it was the best of what I needed without spending a lot for a good one. If you are just wanting to dabble, then it would be a good option. If you want to see anything close around the house, get a 1x with something high resolution.

The digital zoom is going to pixelate the image horribly, so always look at the minimum power as what you will be using most. 2x digital zoom (5x with the base 2.5x optical) is useable on mine but anything above that and its really pixels at that point.
