I have domains expiring tomorrow & next few days with gd.

Question, if I initiate a transfer to a different registrar before expiration, is the domain protected from being lost?

From the little I have read it can take 5-7 days before the transfer is complete, I am NOT a tech or an IT guy so there is a lot I don't understand.

Is your email on this current domain? Is anything hosted at godaddy? Do you ahve any ssl certs with godaddy? Do you have all of your contact information correct on godaddy? I would suggest admin contact has one email & tech contact has a different email? do you have privacy guard on these domains? enerally after domain expiration it has a 30 day grace period before it can be sold again. I have had transfers go easy peasy in a couple of days and have had several take a week. As always check your junk mail on eamil accounts during the transfer process. Just curious whay your leaving godaddy and where your going to?

Thanks for the replies so far.

The 2 domains expiring today do not have sites or emails at this time, some expiring over next 3 days have emails hosted with gd separately, email plan expires in several weeks.

Leaving gd because they are terrible and expensive as well as they were the woke registrar that shut down the arfcom domain for violating TOS with no further explination of how they violated.

I have multiple email accounts there that I can NOT sign into, (office 365 with gd) spent hours on chat multiple times ultimately to have the ticket forwarded to "their advanced team" with resolution expected within 72 hours, never to be heard from again. My interpretation is that it is broke & they can't fix it.

Looking at namecheap & epik but will gladly consider other suggestions.

Question, if I have office 365 with GD & transfer the domain away, does that cause issues with the email until I transfer it somewhere as well?
depends on if you mean GD email or 365 email - if the former, yes, if the latter, then it's not so cut and dry. The domain would already be setup in 365, but it requires mx records on the domain zone setup. I'm guessing godaddy was managing the dns, and zones, now namecheap is. I think namecheap has an easy "on switch" for 365 mail these days.

Namecheap is good, I used them for a while. But I use cloudflare for everything ow. They also have a lot of nice free features.

If you have office 365, you’ll probably just need to make sure when you transfer your domain you also set up the needed TXT record for domain verification and possibly the MX record if there is one.

that's always a good feeling :rockwoot:
    Yes!
I have been with GD for over 20 years. I never have transferred any domains & not being a tech guy I was admittedly nervous about making the move with concerns about doing something wrong & loosing domain, email etc.

Godaddy finally made it more painful to stay with them than to leave.

Now if I can gain access to 3 email accounts (to download messages) that they haven't been able to fix for over a month now. I have come to the realization that those emails are probably not retrievable.

I did this migration for a client. It was a b****. The GD domains and 365 hosting are separate line items.

As I recall this is how I did the transfer. (there may be a missing step. Reach out to GD support for the specifics.)
Go into outlook and export your mailbox to a PST.
Backup anything in Onedrive to an external drive.
Subscribe to 365 and create the mailbox(es)
Add your domain and validate it with the text record
    License the mailboxes.
Update DNS, which causes the mail to start going to your new mailbox.
connect your outlook to the new mailbox.
Once you have that new mailbox setup, it will be empty.
import the data from that PST in step 1. It will upload all your outlook data to the new mailbox.
Same for Onedrive, but that should transfer files automatically.

EDIT: When complete, cancel GD subscription

    Good luck.

They converted all my email accounts to office 365 a while back.

Over the past several months, all the emails have had issues. One or 2 at a time, unable to login just an error code. Took HOURS on chat to get to the point where they admitted they had a widespread issue & were sending it to their "advanced team". 2 of the emails were fixed.

There are 3 now that they sent to their "advanced team" over a month ago to have a resolution within 72 hours, still not fixed to this day. I believe they just put me on ignore, there are multiple posts on their social media & other places with others having same issues.
