    Mindin' My Own Business
So, I'm sitting out at my storage unit today just minding my own, loading up my truck with boxes, strapping down the tarp before the rain hits. I get everything I can loaded up and I'm strapping down the last 4 bungees in the back when I hear someone coming up to my left.

    EPIC Situational awareness fail.

Plainfield Police Officer comes on the outside of the fence of the storage unit with his gun drawn! ON ME!!!

    Wow, that's intense.

That is not cool. Threatening lethal force without provocation is a crime. Something very bad needs to happen to this cop. At a minimum, he doesn't need to carry a badge, ever again.

That's assault and a massive violation of your civil rights under color of state law. This cop needs to be punished, professionally and personally.

The police get a call about someone breaking into some storage units, they roll up and the person has a gun. How else do you guys think this should be handled? If it was my property it would of been handled the same way.

I fail to see what his gun had anything to do with anything.

I fail to understand they they need to run his ID. He had a valid LTCH and there was no reason to "call him in".

Cops get all weird when people other than them have guns.

I agree on calling in the ID, when those were presented it should of been the end of the contact.

You can catch more flies with honey than with vinegar. If I know I'm doing nothing wrong and then I was to have an encounter like this, I would do as told/asked and go on with my life. After all there was a fence between SE and the LEO, so his thinking may have been to use the gun as deterrent to running away. I wouldn't run if a LEO had me at gun point.

I understand about giving up your rights, but this situation isn't a rights violation (IMHO). Sure, they could have removed the cuffs sooner, maybe even stepped inside the storage unit, but the LEOs were responding with, probably, very little info to begin with.

SE - Thanks for taking the time to post this, it shows the good and bad, it also shows the human element at work. I'd be willing to bet that that officer will be explaining to some supervisor this evening what went down and he will receive some corrective training.

    Thanks SE,

    Doug

I knew the officer and he knew me so I wasn't worried. Had it been a rookie, or an officer I didn't know, yea, I'd have needed a change of underwear... :): Good thing I had my truck with a change of clothes just in case... :D

Am I reading this right SE? You know the officer and he knows you and yet holds you at gunpoint? then afterwards comments he is glad more people are carrying? Maybe I am misunderstanding.

Glad everyone went home ok in the end

I'm having a really hard time with why the cop had his gun aimed directly at SE. If I found someone on my property, I might have my hand on my firearm. If I saw they were armed (holstered), I'd probably still just have my hand on my firearm. I can see the cop having it drawn, 45 degrees at the ground, index straight out (not on trigger). Just seems like the cop was offering deadly force before it was justified. Good job on identifying as LE before dodging behind cover (whatever was available) and drawing. Hopefully if I ever get drawn on by surprise, that I'm able to identify before reacting to save my own life. If anything, I'd have to say speak to his superior and fine out if pointing a firearm at someone's head is standard procedure. Just seems like a bad idea to me in this instance.

Plainfield PD does have a bunch of :poop: heads working for them and do need to learn a little respect. I understand they have a job to do and understand how stressful their job can be, but respect can go a long ways.
Back when I was 18, my girlfriend (of 2 months) and I decided we were going to take a late night trip to the Plainfield Wal-mart around 11PM. I drove my vehicle, as she didn’t have a car at the time but did have a valid license, to Wal-mart… no problems. On the way out of Wal-mart she asked if she could drive my car back, which I didn’t see a problem with. Literally 2 miles from Wal-mart on US40 we get pulled over. As soon as the lights kicked on behind us, tears came rolling down her face. Her hands were shaking as if she just killed someone and tossed them in the trunk. I asked her what was wrong before the officer walked up and she stated she had never been pulled over before and was scared. I told her there’s nothing to worry about, just remain calm and she’d be ok.

The officer asked for her driver’s license and the registration to the vehicle. She starts looking through her purse (the size of a duffel bag) and I tell the officer it was my vehicle and that the registration was in the glove box and made sure it was ok to “go digging through the glove box”. He said ok, and I produced the registration as requested. The officer looked at me and asked if everything was ok between us and I answered yes, she’s just nervous because she has never had any interaction with the police before.

The officer looks at her and tells her to get over it and calm down. She says, “I’m sorry I can’t seem to find my license, but I do have one”. The officer asks for her SSN and DOB and then proceeds back to his car to run both of us. I come back clear and she comes back as no record found. He then asks her what she is hiding and if there are any drugs in the car. I told the officer there is absolutely nothing in my car, that I have never done any type of drugs nor were there any in the car. Another officer shows up and asks both of us get out of the vehicle, we get patted down and are separated… And now here comes the questions (what’s her name, how long we’ve known each other, what we were doing out so late, where did I pick her up at).

I overhear the other officer asking her if she’s on any drugs and when was the last time she “used” which is making her cry and get worked up even more. I finally have enough and ask the reason why we got pulled over in the first place and the officer tells me to calm down or I’m going to jail for interrupting a police investigation. I tell the officer “this is complete b*****t, we have nothing to hide and that you guys are throwing this way out of proportion.” (I was 18 and had a big mouth) The officer came back with, “If your woman wasn’t acting so suspicious you would be on your way already.” It turns out this whole incident was over nothing more than a burnt out license plate bulb.

So the :poop: head officer continued his search to ID my girlfriend and realized he couldn’t read his own writing and admitted he typed in a (7) instead of a (2) when he looked up her SSN and that her license also came back valid. At this time we are both sitting on the curb and the officer asks if we had any drugs in the car. I told him, “I’ve never done drugs or have ever been in contact with any kind of drugs, so no there were none in the car.” He asked if he could take a look and me knowing my rights I told him, “You have already wasted 30 minutes of my time so no you can’t look in my car and that I would be more than happy to waste 30 minutes of your time by waiting on K9 to show up”. Realizing they had no PC to conduct a search and unwilling to wait for K9 to show up we were on our way.

So yes, a few PPD officers are on a power trip and nearly every one I've encountered since then think their :poop: dont stink. Even a few APD officers I know pretty well have admitted PPD has a bunch of douche bags working for them that need to get a refresher course in policing every now and then.

Wow. I just can't believe some of you guys. Seriously.

you were accessing your property, its the same thing!! just like if a neighbor has your property blocked in on 4 sides and the only way you can get to your property is to cross his, you dont need his permission, you have a LEGAL RIGHT to get to your property. and while you are renting it it IS LEGALY YOUR PROPERTY!

did they have a warrant to search you??? carrying a gun does not give them probable cause to handcuff and search you, and neither does being in the right place at their wrong time.

well you gave up your rights to be treated like a proper citizen of the united states to a couple of storm troopers. please file a complaint at least. i cant believe you think it was just another day in the name of good police work. the IMPD cops in my area dont act like that, they act like proffessionals.

Just because I had a legal right to be there doesn't mean the officers knew that. BURGLARY CALL, GUY WITH A GUN LOADING UP A TRUCK. What's so hard to understand? They didn't run the LTCH, just the ID. And just because the officer knew me (if he did remember who I was, it's been a while) doesn't mean I couldn't have turned criminal. He doesn't know that I would never have pulled my gun on him.

He didn't search me, it was a simple pant down. He never even searched my truck. He had no reason nor did he have permission. No rights were violated. It wasn't because I was carrying a gun that I got handcuffed. It was because it was a BURGLARY call and I was the one loading up the truck. When have you ever heard of someone suspected of a Felony that HASN'T been put on the ground and cuffed, or held at gun point? Guilty or not, I've not heard of anyone that hasn't.

So are you saying that police should never cuff or hold at gun point anyone suspected of a felony, guilty or not?

Great, so after getting to know you a little better, he will be sure to shoot you next time :):

Some days I could only wish to be so lucky! J/K, J/K

Well, that sounds like a pants wetting experience LOL.

OTOH, it must feel good to know that if anyone screws with your stuff in storage, it seems to be well protected!!

That's what I told them. I thanked them for being quick to get out there and looking after the units. If someone WAS breaking into my unit, I'd want them to handle it the same. Who knows. The people on the other side of the fence could have been my accomplice. :dunno:

This did not turn out all right. He went home emotionally affected, and this will stay with him for the rest of his life.

If you really think I'm emotionally scarred in some bad way, you got it all wrong. You are right this will be with me the rest of my life, but in a good way. To say that they should all be fired is beyond harsh. They did their jobs and did it well. Period.

I fail to see what his gun had anything to do with anything.

I fail to understand they they need to run his ID. He had a valid LTCH and there was no reason to "call him in".

Again, they may have known who I was, but that doesn't mean they trust me to be a stand up citizen. I have been in trouble before. And also read my previous comment above. Of course they needed to check my ID and run it to make sure they knew who I was. The first guy I knew, the backup officer I did not.

I knew the officer and he knew me so I wasn't worried. Had it been a rookie, or an officer I didn't know, yea, I'd have needed a change of underwear... :): Good thing I had my truck with a change of clothes just in case... :D

Yea, you read that right. Again, see my above comments. It's not like they jack-booted me to the ground and what not. I was just complying and they were very polite the whole time. As messed up as that sounds.

I know the feeling. Back before 2000 all the PPD cops were as cool as ice. Officer Graham used to rollerblade and hang out with us down at hummel park in the summer and a few others used to pull us over just to mess with us and we were all fine with that cause we were all cool and on first name basis with each other.

After 2000, Graham got fired over some :bs: which should have been Berguson, but instead he was promoted. Then they all just became real buttholes and started spending more time out of town.

Avon PD are kinda stuck up too. I have had good encounters with a couple of them though.

I want out of this town. I've lived here for too long. I didn't like it when I moved here, I didn't like it when I left and came back the first or second time and I STILL hate it. It's time to move.

Doesn't if feel like it burns wherever the gun is pointing on your body? It's almost as if that part of your body puckers up because it is preparing for worst case scenario. If you don't know where its pointing, the feeling is like walking through a spider web. Don't know where it is, but lets move around as much as possible untill you are sure its gone. I've had police and bonehead gun handlers both point guns at me. No me gusto.
