    .
All of my BP cartridges use soft lead and SPG lube. I don't load a lot of them compared to smokeless. 38 lc for the Colt Lightnings is a special case though, I use Hornady 148 grain HBWC with a light coating of SPG. I've thought about trying a heeled bullet for these to see if I would get better accuracy, I was really impressed with the heeled cartridge performance in the Richards.

Great lube for sure. Ive played with 20-1 up to 30-1 lead/ tin over the years in cartridges. Mostly nowdays its 20-1 and lubed with SPG in a saeco with a die a thou to large, just to lube and are loaded as cast.
I tried for years to reinvent the 40-65, 45 -70 and 45-90 BP wheel.
A few hours with Steve Brooks and he put me in a better place.

Dang. Now I'm thinking of loading some 25-20 with bp. Bought my pre lubed cast bullets already made from a guy in TX though.
He seemed like a good source of loading info through a few e-mail exchanges.
While I'm at it may as well load up some 45-70 with bp for the Pedersoli rolling block.
No, I never loaded bp cartridge before but do have the booklet written by Mike Venturino and Steve Garbe.

Great book, I would also suggest reading Paul Matthews books.
Learning to load and cast for big bore BP I had to relearn decades of smokeless loading I had learned.
    Different bear for sure.

I am slowly getting back into loading BP. I’ll never be a match grade shooter with irons but I do enjoy the older guns and some newer ones with the Smokey stuff!

I have a cadet model trapdoor that I have had some fun with, but haven’t shot it in far too long. Last year I picked up a Bannerman Special .50-70 trapdoor and lucked into dies and brass and got a Lee bullet mold. I just pan/dip lube them and push them through a very simple home made cookie cutter and load them over Fg.

The sharps is a recent buy and I’ve only had it tot he range twice, once was on the way home with it and wasn’t very well prepared. Last time I took a variety of smokeless and some BP loads. I have a s8ngle cavity 300 gr mold and a lovely 6 cav 425 mold from Arsenal. I was kind of hoping the 425 would shoot better just becau it’s faster casting! They both shot fairly equally and the 425 didn’t really have too much more recoil so I’ll be going with loading more of them up. I can shoot out to 300 yards, so no real need to mess with heavier bullets for longer range. I’m casting these out of 20:1 and lubing them with my home made lube. 806107C9-2CA5-4819-A517-D31AAF876E50.jpg

I'm not sure how deeply I will get into bp cartridge but sure want to try it. I've got plenty of experience with muzzleloaders
but not bp cartridge. I've always loved the older stuff. If I were to get into more older guns some of the newer ones that
don't get used would need to go. First to go would be a Browning trap gun. Never could shoot it good anyway and do
much better with my Browning field gun.

My rolling block needs to be taken out. Almost forgot about my three 38-55's that are perfect candidates for bp cartridges. I've got plenty of brass for all the aforementioned.

Is that one of the .38/55’s or a .45/70? I’ve always wanted a big rolling block. I’ve got a couple of .22’s and a .32 rimfire that I am going to convert to 32 SWL.
