Just wondering what everyone is feeding their dogs? It appears we may not be feeding the best pet food for our gang.

For the longest time we have been feeding Purina Dog chow, but it looks like their is a lot of grain filler, which might explain why the goats devour it. Looks like the Canine officers over at Metro are fed Diamond brand, but I am not sure if that is due to cost or If it is proven to meet their needs. For simplicity I would like feed on brand to both the pets and the LGD’s.

With Purina Pushing $30.00 a bag it seems like a good time to check to see if their are better alternatives?

    Thanks

Hills prescription for our adult Shi Tzu’s and Natures Recipe puppy for the pups. But these guys have weak stomachs. Not the cheapest but we have it delivered on a schedule. Our past two only seemed to eat dog food as a supplement to table food. They lived 14.2 and 12.5 years so I don’t want to hear crap about feeding them from the table!

Another vote for Diamond (large breed lamb and rice). Its what our breeder used, vet recommends and and I can pick it up on one of my frequent Menards or TSC trips.

We used grain free Blue natural with out last dog who developed a cardiomyopathy at 10 years old. Blue is one of the grain free foods that has been implicated in possibly causing a cardiomyopathy in breeds not prone to it. I would double check with your vet.

Yeah we have refrained from table scraps. For all the dogs. Seems like they all do better that way. Because in the past we have had dogs that did the yeah I am not eating dog food, pass the steak lol. For the most part the LGD‘s eat only pet food unless they get ahold of something, coyote, snake, etc.

part of me thinks if they are eating a lot of something perhaps it’s not providing what they need.

I want to do a bit more research on the Diamond, from what I can see it’s not the cheapest on the market so I do don’t think it’s selected because it is cheap.

For about 6 years we were feeding our Mastiff Diamond Naturals. She started having tummy issues and after ruling out everything else we switched foods. Now using Rachael Ray with very good results for the last 6 months.

We're thinking maybe an ingredient in the Diamond Naturals had to be sourced elsewhere during the whole Covid BS, and maybe that's what caused the sudden tummy problems.

Either way stay away from the grains. Guarantee your dog will poop less

Been feeding Diamond Naturals for over 15 years(GSD, Brittany and Vizslas). Usually use Lamb and rice, but sometimes change it up to chicken and rice. Currently the ~60lb Brittany and ~40lb vizsla go through one 40lb bag per month.

I have been getting it at Menards because it is closest, but I used to get it at Rural Kink. Just picked a bag up this week for $30.99 +tax.

We are feeding Rachel Ray Puppy food to the little ones and they seem to like it a lot.

I miss Menards. I don’t mind paying a little more, for the food, but when Purina is hitting 30 a bag I tend to think there are a lot better choices out there for the money.

The way I see it I don’t see many top athletes dining exclusively on Mc Donald’s.

    Our dogs work pretty hard.

As far as big brands that are readily available, I have fed the Diamond naturals for years with good success. Purina One also has good results for most dogs.

You mentioned that the dogs work pretty hard, and if that is the case you might consider a higher fat and protein. I have been feeding Kinetic 30K to my Malinois for his whole life, and he does really well on it. It is not cheap however.

When I got my GSD as a puppy(back in2000), I went to a pet store to grab some Purina Puppy chow. The owner of the store introduced me to Professional brand dog food. He ate less without sacrificing growth, and he pooped less. I stuck with Professional until the pet store closed, and I researched ingredients and guaranteed analysis of other foods. That's how I found Diamond, and I have stuck with it since. For the Vizslas, I would switch to their extreme athlete before hunting season began. Only did that for a few years, then realized it wasn't much benefit.

It's funny, because when I was at Purdue the only name ever heard in the AnSci department was Purina. That's why I fed Purina.

Good thing you didn't ask this question on a Gundog forum. That's like asking which is better, 9mm or 45ACP.LOL

Our vet recommends Pro Plan, but because of skin allergies, we have to use an all-lamb food. Most "lamb" or "beef" foods actually contain a good bit of chicken or chicken meal, but Earthborn Meadow Feast Sensitive Skin and stomach does not contain any poultry products. That's what we've been feeding for a few years, and our dogs seem to do well on it.

Natural Balance dry food. Was doing the limited ingredient no grain of various flavors but switched up to limited ingredient but with brown rice to introduce some grains, again of various flavor proteins to switch things up here and there (most recently lamb).

Reintroduced the grain in the form of rice, as I've read that a complete no grain diet can cause issues potentially.

Our miniature Aussie seems to do well on it.

Before that with our Border Collie of many years we fed Nutro and then Blue Buffalo but they seemed to have several recalls during that period, and switched up to some others.
