...Private unarmed security patrols will now be checking a total of eight parks in Bloomington, a collection that extends a bit farther, north-to-south, than the extent of the B-Line Trail.

The $52,500 contract addendum with Marshall Security, to cover the additional parks, was approved by Bloomington’s board of park commissioners at its Tuesday afternoon meeting.

That brings the total amount of the contract with Marshall to $113,000. The money is being drawn from CARES (Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security) Act funds...:xmad:

If the PMC model works for overseas operations, why not at home too?

I know that's jest, but the big reason is the pay gap between domestic security jobs and PMCs. There's a difference in quality of candidate at 6 figures a year vs 6 bucks an hour. Private security stateside is often a joke because of that, as well as liability-driven decision making and society's rather uncharitable view of the prestige of the job.

Had to look that up, to me PMC is still a cartridge company from the 80s.

That has to be a stretch taking federal covid money and using it for city security, Bloomington taxpayers should be footing the bill for this. This a local company, wonder what the connection is between it's principles and the park commissioners. maybe another concrete deal like the city went through a while back.

Got a tour of some of their fancy new "trails" a while back. Holy Cow, there are a lot of bums in that town. Whole tent cities on public/railway land, right next to their multi-million dollar trail/park system. My wife went for a walk while I was in a meeting, and came right back to sit in the locked car.

But, hey! We got Federal grants for the trails, and now Federal Grants to "secure" the trails!:spend:

B-town PD's pay is below the rest of the state. Consequently (and maybe for other reasons as well) they have fairly high turnover and are currently understaffed (according to at least 1 officer I know).

So, I can see why they've involved private security. Hopefully it's a stopgap measure, but I doubt it given the current leftist/liberal posture towards law enforcement.

There's also a disproportionate homeless issue in B-town currently (for self-inflicted reasons, imho). They like to hang out/live in the parks. Hence the need for parks security.

I was mostly curious as to why Bloomington would need security in the parks, but with this new source from another thread at my fingertips I now see why...

Yep.... Bloomington is devolving into what most progressive cities devolve into.

Many folks I know have gone there for school. They seem to always look at the place through "rose colored glasses". As a result, they are blind to what a ****hole it is in many aspects.

Galaxy brain city leaders let a section of the big warehouse along the west edge of Switchyard Park get converted into a ginormous homeless shelter. $30-whatever million in bonds and we park a homeless mecca right next to it right as construction completed.

It did clean up some of the tent city that sprang up on the brand new lawns, but make no mistake, the homeless own that park and we pay for it.

This ^. Anyone qualified to do PMC work is not gonna take a BS security job for low wages.

Myself and a bunch of other vets got sucked into security gigs during the 2020 riots but that was for surprisingly good money. Better than some PMC’s want to pay for 1st tour as a contractor doing gate guard duty.......
