I recently went to an appleseed shoot and bought a marlin 795 for it. I find the Marlin to be a bit small for me. Any suggestions for a good .22lr magazine fed?

If you're looking for a good full sized 22 that isn't a lot of money, take a look at the Ruger American. I picked one up several months ago and immediately retired my CZ, I like it that much. Comes with interchangable combs for scope or iron sight use, fairly good irons, and the 22lr version uses 10/22 mags.

Is it much different than the 10/22?

Ruger 10/22...more options than any other .22 semi auto out there. Buy a basic model and customize till you have it exactly as you want it.

My Nodak based Appleseed 10/22...granted with this one the only Ruger part used is the magazine...

The RA 22lr rimfires use 10/22 mags, but are bolt guns and do not share much else with the 10/22s.

I have handled the 512s some, but they are still on my "want" list.

The Browning's might be another nice option, if they are within budget.

I love Brownings but man are they pricey. Can't justify the expense for a target practice gun.

I really haven't shot many others but agree on the 10/22 having the most options available.
Earned my first rifleman patch with an old, beat up one.

Yep. Plenty of $600+ 10/22s around (including one or two of mine.) If you have a chance, you might want to check out the Design Contest model. It has a modified version of the Ruger American rimfire stock and some other nice touches out of the box. IIRC, the basic concept was submitted by an Appleseed instructor. Form$300-320, you get a stainless 10/22 in a decent stock (for offhand) with aperture sights, picatinny rail, & threaded barrel.

Edit: If you want to do something to it down the road, add the Kidd trigger upgrade, bolt release, & bolt buffer + a TacSol mag release lever. It will feel like a totally different rifle and the upgrades can be done as funds allow or are justified (rationalized.)

Congrats on the multiple rifleman patches. I plan on going back when the Spring appleseeds start up. The marlin 795 just felt small to me and I had trouble aiming in prone because of the length.

I did a KD shoot with a new scope. The eye relief was so long that I had to move my head way back on the stock, and couldn't get a consistent cheekweld/turkey neck.
I managed a 1.5" sighter group @ 300 yards, yet couldn't get on target consistently. At the time I felt the weekend was a complete failure. Only later, I realized how much knowledge I gained from that shoot (Including, run gear which is known by you).
The patches are icing on the cake... but the journey (always in hindsight for me) is the fun part (as frustrating as it may be sometimes).
You'll get your patch with enough persitance!

anyone have any experience with the savage 64 fvxp? Its affordable and some retailers offer a package with a scope. All of my hunting guns are savages, so I'm somewhat brand loyal.

Scope is junk, IMO, but the 64 I had some time back shot well enough. It seemed picky about ammo, though.

Not packages, but the FV-SR & TR-SR models caught my eye.

I was in the same boat, and went with the Ruger American Rimfire, and I love it. The iron sights if comes with are pretty good, but I put a scope on it from AA Optics, and all it does is make one ragged hole if I do my part.

I'm 6'3" with an even longer wing span. I love my 795. The trigger is fantastic and it's a tack driver. I made a field expedient comb adjustment and now wouldn't trade it for anything.
