I'm considering buying an ipod touch, then possibly eventually an iPhone, if I don't resign my contract with Verizon upon expiration. My question is, do any of you who use iPod touch/iphones have them "unlocked or jailbroken?" Any adverse effects of doing so? Recommendations? Thanks.

I have an iPhone. I've not unlocked it.

Sounds like unlocking works for the most part. You must be fairly technically inclined to do this and extremely careful about applying updates.

I've never felt the need to unlock it. It is plenty functional for everything I want it to do.

Best single piece of technology I've ever owned.

I really enjoy the iphone, I will consider buying one when my contract is up with Verizon, unless they're really vying to keep my business. The Palm Pre is another strong contender, Verizon is rumoured to add the Pre to their 2010 lineup. If that's the case, then I'm a little more likely to stay with Verizon. I'm not crazy about the Blackberries, they're ok and all but I've not yet met one I really liked the interface on. Currently, I'm looking into buying a ipod touch, but I've not yet decided whether or not to buy it.

I love my iPhone. It is still locked to AT&T since I cant access corporate exchange with an unlocked device (possible security risk etc.).

As far as phones go, the iPhone is top dog. I have had blackberry, and windows mobile phones in the past, and they just can't compare.

The only place where blackberry wins is device side filtering, but only offering BB desktop manager for windows is a huge fail, and exchange server side filtering works fine for me.

I am lost when it comes to cell phones. Whats the deal with these new iphones, do they have like a walkman built inside them or something?

They're basically a little touchscreen computer with internet access, a phone, an MP3 player, and a camera all wrapped up in a neat little package, and then some. They can play games, you name it, it can just about do it. Impressive piece of kit, there are cheaper options out there that can do similar tasks, but I don't know of a better one that does it all.

Ipod touch user since they first came out. I have jailbroken it a few times. You do get lots of extra kewl stuff that way with the underground apps. I got tired of having to re-hacking it though when a new update came out. I am one of those guys that just have to update when it comes out.

I have a 2G iPhone unlocked to be used with T-Mobile. I also have the Jailbreaking programs on my personal computer if interested. The first one I jailbroke seemed to take forever with a few complications, and the one I have now was jailbroke the first try. If you are going to do this yourself there are a ton of youtube videos showing how to do it (most of which at 13yr old kids) but they seem to know what they are talking about... No problems here!

I have an Ipod Touch and have used many brands of smart phones. My current smart phone is the brand new Palm Pre. I've also used Blackberry, Palm Centro, Palm Treo, etc. If I could switch to the iPhone I would do it in a heartbeat.

The Touch and the iPhone are simply better devices than all the other units out there combined.

I have an Iphone 2G and, its a great phone. It's like having a mini netbook with you all the time. I can hear very well on it, has great battery life, and there are tons of great free apps and games. It's with me all the time.

if you like the iphone and verizon then you may want to wait because there are rumblings high up at AT&T about verizon getting it when their contract with apple runs out.

Any ideas as to when AT&T's contract will run out with Verizon? If they don't go nuts on the plans much in the same way AT&T has, I'd be inclined to stay with Verizon as they've typically taken fairly decent care of what little problems I've had with them.

I take it you're on Sprint now? How are you liking the Pre so far?

I think the Pre could use some of the functions of the TREO or CENTRO with their central toggle button. The fact is that the toggle is faster to use and makes navigation easier. The Pre is a great toy, decent camera, but its not a serious business tool. So I suppose it depends on what in your phone.

Just to add to it, you can add programs to it. Its not just an internet browser or for playing games. Specifically, there are ballistics programs where you input the pertinent information on your cartridge and conditions and it will calculate the windage/elevation adjustments you need to make. There are hundreds of thousands of programs that can be downloaded for free or a small fee and they cover all sorts of things you may want/need to do with it.

Correct. From hobby stuff like the ballistics calculator, to life savers like the Diabetes Log that can be used by insulin dependent diabetics.
