Hey guys, i was wondering if anyone out there could school on the Mosin Nagat. I'm looking for a more powerful rifle and relatively cheap to get back into sharp shooting, but i also want something that has a bit of kick behind it.

    thanks!

Thank you! So im guessing they are a pretty solid rifle according to that site? Have any of you had the pleasure of firing one?

probably nothing over 100 yards as it getting quite hard to find anywhere to shoot up here farther than that

I have four of them (91/30, m44, t53, and a m38) I love shooting them. The recoil is definitely noticeable but enjoyable. Accuracy for what I do is good. I shoot tannerite out to 100 yards with ease, never been big into punching holes in paper and seeing how tight of a group I can get so I cant tell you how consistent they are.

It may be easier to ask who does not own one here. The most fun for the buck in the shooting world. They are built like a tank and kick like a mule. When you're done shooting her, wash her down with water and dry her off, give a little oil and she will love you forever.

The 91/30 is great gun and easily customize-able. But like someone said earlier they are not very accurate past a hundred yards (alot of bullet drop with surplus ammo). The T53 is another good option if your wanting a cheap carbine to play around with. But I would look carefully at a T53 the bores on many of them are junk.

If sharpshooting is what you want don't look at a Mosin! They are fun shooters and relatively inexpensive. I had a full size and Carbine version. They are not anything to write home about in the accuracy department unless you get a stellar example. Very crude and robust but they do work.

My 91/30 will smoother an 8 inch target at 100 yards. Probably, would be better if the target wasn't so fuzzy, my eyes. I did luck out. Found one with almost a new barrel and the bolt is close to buttery smooth. My favorite rifle to target with.

well whats your definition of "sharpshooting" remember accuracy cost more than a hundred bucks and surplus ammo is far from consistent, as for the mosin get one enjoy it, but make sure you you inspect it very thoroughly before buying check the bore, and the crown. your best bet is to take someone who knows the rifles well, or do a lot of studying before you buy. you can get some good accuracy from them, but you need good ammo and some modifications that can help. but dont expect one inch groups i can get 1.5 moa on a calm cold day from a rest and a bench and that's not all the time 2.0 to 2.5 moa is far more common and what i expect from it, my other mosins don't shoot any better ether i can hit milk jugs at 200 yards with pretty regularly so im happy with it. . so not a target gun but enough for most people.:twocents:

The carbine versions aren't bad close-range fire starters either! ;)

:ar15:< not quite that quick firing, but the flash is familiar. :D

Be very particular if you want a shooter. As with most milsurp rifles, a lot of Mosins have seen better days. Bore condition. Bore condition. BORE CONDITION!!!!! Don't just pick up the first one you see and expect it to be a bench rifle. Good Mosin bores are out there!! Mirror bore, chamber not eroded, sharp lands!! Tough to find in a Soviet 91/30 refurb. Easier to find in a Finnish Mosin like a M39 or a Tikka 91/30 - but much more expensive. Worth you wait and trouble if you want 1-2MOA from a Mosin. Forget the carbines unless you just want to make noise. Good luck in your quest.

I was looking for a rifle about a month ago for the exact same reasons that you are. I went to my local gun shop (Bradis) and found a 1942 Mosin in good shape and it's been one of the most enjoyable gun purchases I have ever made. The round is beastly and it's a pretty cheap gun to shoot. I have put about 100 rounds through it already (60 Winchester target rounds and about 40 surplus) and it's been awesome. You can get spam cans of surplus ammo for around $90 online and a little more locally.

You would do yourself a favor and pick up the Mosin. There are better guns out there but you are going to pay for them. For under $200, the Mosin get's my vote everytime.

    Good luck.
