If I hauled my ass into the store to see what they have, why should they ignore me to talk to people on the phone. the phone rings constantly. Once on the phone the guy never wants to get off. he has to bitch about not answering the phone, the lack of stock, the high prices. If they have something he has lots of questions, wants them to hold it for him :blahblah:
From having worked retail for nearly 20 years now, this is pretty accurate. While the original poster may have had an easy 30 second question, the guy calling a minute before him probably had 5 minutes of questions, and the guy calling 45 seconds after him had 8 minutes of questions.

The customers in the store are more important. End of story.

So it sounds like some folks will never come back if they answer the phone while you are there, and some folks will never come there if they don’t answer the phone when you call. Sounds like America to me.

Why not hire one person whose job it is to answer the phone all day and resolve customer calls while the rest of the staff work onsite customers? Have the phone system set up to answer callers first come, first serve with automated announcements to callers about their place in the queue. Should minimize (won’t eliminate) the number of PO’d people.

Okay, so they hire an extra person to answer the phone. There are two guys working the counter and now they have 8 customers standing around the counter waiting to be helped (not unusual at ZX). Is the phone answering guy, who is not on the phone right now, going to sit and wait for it to ring?

Yes, if the intent is to minimize the number of PO’d customers. Naturally you put the phone guy in a back office so the ones waiting for counter help can’t see there’s someone who may not be 100% busy. All they see is some guy who comes out of the back office, confers with some of the counter salesmen and/or looks something up, and then disappears back into the office until he comes out again, rinse and repeat. Presumably the phone guy can help with orders, inventory, shipping & receiving or whatever when he’s not on the phone. It ain’t rocket science!

Still not going to work. For starters it's almost certain a dedicated phone guy is not going to bring in enough money to pay for itself. He would need to add one or two gun sales every day he worked just to break even.

The vast majority of people on the phone are going to be one of two types. The ones who are going to come in anyways, or the ones that are never going to come in anyways.

And thinking him being able to check stuff on the sales floor without pissing off waiting in store purchase customers is also laughable. When phone guy gets the call to take a trigger gauge out and check the trigger pull on all the glocks and report back which one has the best trigger, what is measures, and to ask them to hold it, (real call by the way) do you really think the 4 guys standing in front of the glock case that all want to look at glocks are just going to patiently wait while phone guy is checking the trigger pull on each?

ZX had some Glocks in stock this morning. 17, 43, 45, a couple others.
They had one of those fancy Sig P320s with the optic and everything but it was 15 something.
