The media usually gets things pretty wrong. Usually. I'm not saying anything beyond what's in public domain here...but "usually" has exceptions.

He told police he was trying to walk past his sister when she “came towards him.” He maintained the gun “went off accidentally,” according to court documents. He then said he pumped the shotgun to chamber another round and the “shotgun went off a second time.”

Dude claims he accidentally shot his sister *twice* IN SELF DEFENSE...with a pump shotgun. Bro. Even Marion County juries aren't *that* gullible.

Not really what you expect from someone who accidentally shot his sister, twice.

Pending littering charge (no kidding) driving while suspended with weed...

It doesn't surprise me though. At my first job there were guys in the factory who were either perpetrators of, or victims of, spontaneous violence. To a farm kid it made no sense as I knew these guys and at work none seemed capable of what they did or being victims of their fate. Just the wrong thing at the wrong time seemed to have set their incidents in motion, trivial things really. One young man I knew beat another to death outside a VP over 57 cents.

I ate with and joked around with these guys during breaks and over time it gave me an odd feeling, like they were all bombs, ready to go off with just the wrong push.

Most of the people who do these insane things are exactly as you describe. In certain surroundings they are decent enough but on the street at any given moment they can pop. And do.

Maybe he's trying the Alec Baldwin defense.
