Any mention of the percentage of 17-20 year olds are giant pussies and the fact some 1/4 to 1/3 report mental illness?

My son is enlisting. Per his recruiter, the number one reason potential recruits are turned away is NOT:
    1) Obesity (which was my guess)
    2) Drug use
    3) Criminal background

It's: History of anxiety meds. I suspect the constant bombardment of doom porn and always being connected has lead to a lot of it. Talking to my son and his (admittedly dorky) friends, they don't care about the things us middle aged vets care about. Teen brains are still teen brains. They just want to know they can still get on social media and be dumbasses without being outcasts.

    I joined in '84, retired in '06.

When I joined, we were past the Vietnam "babykiller" hate from democrats. It was a good patriotic time to join. By the time I retired, I started to see the the cracks in the foundation, and I had to go seek new challenges.

When I retired, 2 of my kids expressed interest in joining. One wanted to go Army like me, one wanted to go Air Force. I forbade them from doing so. They were great candidates. Excellent grades, physically fit, motivated and well-adjusted. I forbade them from doing so. Threatened to disinherit them. We are all glad that they didn't defy me now.

Worked out for the best. They didn't get maimed or killed in wars that the politicians didn't let us fight properly.

I guess the democrats figured out the old adage "if you can't beat 'em, join 'em". They gained power by joining up and spreading liberal policies and practices through the officer corps, and became politicians who corrupted and weakened the military with their democrat policies.

That's where we are now. The type of people the military needs are not the type of people they want. It's not a warfighting machine, it's a social program.

I’m afraid they might be getting the kind of people they DO want. That should scare us all.
When I was in Korea in '85, we were on a field problem, in the defense. Just training. I was sharing my foxhole (sorry, defensive fighting position) with a KATUSA. That's a Korean guy who avoids serving in the ROK army and serves in a US unit, usually because he comes from a wealthy family.

We had full mags of blanks, and an ammo can full of blanks in the bottom of the foxhole.

Well, we get raided by a ROK army unit. I'm popping their MILES gear left and right, and so is the KATUSA. Shortly, they're not even shooting, just running at us until we set off their MILES. Apparently the ROK unit is out of ammo.

All of a sudden, I see boxes of blanks flying at the ROKs. I look over and see the KATUSA is chucking boxes of our ammo out to the ROKs. I grab him and stop him and ask "WTF are you doing"? Tears rolling down his face, he screams "They're out of ammo! It's not fair"! I yell back "It's not supposed to fair"! I smush him down in a corner of the foxhole and tell him to stay there, and take away his rifle, and get back to popping ROKs.

At ENDEX, I tell my squad leader what went down, and that KATUSA went to the ROK army the next day. That was the first of 3 KATUSAs I got sent to the ROK army.

Looking back now, and looking forward, I wonder how many of our fighting forces have more compassion than fight in them.

To clarify a few things from my story:

MILES is multiple integrageted laser engagement system. It's laser tag by another name. You wear a harness on your torso and a ring around your helmet, and mount a box on the barrel of your rifle. Fire your rifle (or MG or whatever) and the box sends out a beam that trips the beeper, right next to your enemies ear. They have to take the key out of the box on their rifle and stick it in their harness, effectively taking them out of the fight like they've been killed. Weapon won't send a beam without the key in it.
