    They've been doing it for years, and have talked about it. They insist it's not for the purpose of creating a database, just to preserve records, of course. That's BS for two reasons, creating a database once the information has been scanned into a computer will be easy, all the hard work will have been done. The records they say need preserving are mountains of old 4473s mouldering away in warehouses. It's BS because 4473s over 20 years old don't need to be preserved, they should just burn or shred the old ones and lighten their burden. They can't want that info for any good reason.

    Anyone that's deposited a personal check at an ATM should realize the capability for software to "read" a scanned image. Different check styles, colors, sizes and handwritten payee, dollar amount, etc. all read quickly and usually accurately. There is no doubt regarding a searchable database of gun purchases and owners. My only real surprise is that .gov didn't make the FFL's foot the bill for the imaging costs.
