I know how he must have felt his first go-'round. This is without a doubt an abomination. This thread will serve as record of an attempted salvage. Shame as it appears to be "functional" (parts move freely) during initial inspection. Needs serious TLC without saying.

Step 1: Total disassembly and assessment. I will break down the smaller action bits/tube/mount/etc. as I document. For now some broad strokes.
Don't even get me started on the decades of filth. One piece at a time. The stock will need replaced. Period correct scope is thrashed as well. Will take awhile to go through the individual parts.

Don't think I've ever seen a "Gill Gun" in a plastic stock. Numrich Gun parts will have anything you need, I've fixed 2 of them with parts from there.

Originally thought to be Bakelite, I understand it to be a "milk plastic". I was going to attempt to repair the break, but the crack further up by the receiver may be the deciding factor in going to wood.

The internals look good, other than a lot of unfortunate character it should be a solid piece. And I don't think you can ever go wrong with a good set of wood ;)

More progress made today in disassembly and assessment. To be technical, this turned it to be a JC Higgins model 101.16 (same as Springfield 87/Savage 6). Some preliminary rust removal brought the barrel markings out. A few pins seized up (carbon/funk/God knows what else), and the mag tube is proving difficult. Will let 'er soak overnight and try again tomorrow morning.

For anyone interested, I am using a solvent that has served me well to combat carbon. USA made, Veteran owned. Great stuff. I use both the solvent and the oil (mostly on AR bcg's). This bolt was soaked for just 3-4 minutes and hand scrubbed. Night and day difference.

That was a seriously used and unloved firearm that seems to have just kept doing its job for the abusers. Good to see it getting some love.

Following because I like to take worn, beat up stuff and make them look and function well again. For me it doesn't matter if it's an old car, gun or snowblower.

    It's just fun.

RR, I'm not sure it this is good advice, but I used that citrus orange cleaner to thoroughly clean the parts of a Garand I had. It didn't hurt any of the finishes on the rifle and got everything very clean. It's not expensive and smells good! However, you will have zero lube after you use a product like that so lubricating will be required.

It will be fun to watch this progress.

Thanks. I'm in no hurry, gonna take the time to be meticulous. Photo documentation and notes as I go. My Numrich order is growing. Discovered late last night the entire left side extractor components are missing.

Not much time at the bench, but managed to get the striker, plunger, and springs cleaned up.

If I knew what was growing in the trigger guard, I'd give it a name.

Picked up a non-functional parts rifle from a fellow INGO'er for the monster. Can't wait to refinish the stock. Work as time allows, the daunting process of stripping the rust & bluing is next. Pics in a few days. For now I can't decide what color it's new stain will be....

Good thread and interesting. That rifle has been rode hard and put up wet. May I ask where it came from?
A very dear friend was given this from his father in 1961. My friend was a child, and this was his first .22. He then passed it on to his son, who didn't take care of it to say the least. It was found in such condition in a closet corner. Neglected and abused. I will do my best to restore it to a functional capacity and make it look decent (as much as I can).

I won't obviously have it done in time for Xmas, but will present it to him as a gift when finished. I hope to resurrect a child-like feeling of joy to a person who very much deserves an uptick in life.

Thank you for the explanation. It is interesting how some will cherish a gift from family while others take it for granted. The restoration sounds like it means a lot to your friend. A noble project and I hope both you and your friend are happy with the results.

He gave me the rifle and said "you can keep it if you fix it." He looked quite downtrodden. I could tell it bothered him.

I have the same rifle and the plastic stock is still intact. They were known to crack in the cold so mine never leaves the house when the temps drop. I thought of replacing it with a wood stock and at the time Boyds made a replacement for it. I checked and it's no longer cataloged but it might not hurt to contact them if you can't find a replacement some where else. I don't know if they still do it but if they had the pattern they would make a one off, little expense but if you need it...

Thanks. I saw boyds no longer listed it, and ebay was north of $100. Here is the stock taken off the parts rifle.

Busy but not forgotten. Hoping to get back to it soon (alas, her project stepped in line). Replacement V22 scope arrived from TX yesterday. New on bottom. $20 GB score.
