Most preppers stocks the basics like food, water, fuel, medication, ammo, etc. What are some of the less conventional things you stock?

I think things like liquor and cigarettes would be very valuable in an emergency. Trade value on things like that could be high. How about things like candy or hygiene products? What else?

A driver that works for a company that replaces uniforms and door mats each week (I won't say biz name) for other companies, is a non-smoker. He includes tobacco in his preps. He started with loose leaf but as it expired it had no use/value. He said he switched to cartons of cigs and will sell them to coworkers at cost as he replaces them with fresh stock.

The simple answer is you need to stock a years supply of EVERYTHING you use.

Once that is done then look to what you can trade and barter.

The web is full of great lists to help you get started.

I like this site as it will lead you to sites you might not find elsewhere and topics you never would think of.

Just remember that you need to have the stuff properly stored. How do you store fruits, veggies & other items when you run out of lids? How to make soap/shampoo/toothpaste? Do you have a good basement/root cellar?
    Water purification tablets?
    rubbing alcohol
    peroxide
do you know how to make apple cider vinegar?
    seed bank.

We have been canning pickles, green beans, some tomatoes.
We also dehydrate & then grind various peppers for seasoning.
We have chickens & get several eggs a day.
Also looking towards meat rabbits & honey bee's
I also learned how to make sourdough starter(flour & water).
I also make wine, beer & cider.

    Unconventional....

Not every disaster is an end of the world event where you get to play Rambo. A natural disaster or family emergency could cause you to flee your home and having this information handy will save a lot of hassle. If you are a thousand miles away and need to call the water company to shut off your water do you know their phone number and your account number? Are you able to print a medical power of attorney if your wife becomes seriously ill when out of town? Heck, I even have a resume if I need to find a job after my city is decimated and I have relocated. The link below is to a great resource provided by FEMA

Download this form and record the relevant information and gather copies of relevant documents. I have captured all this information on a single (2-sided) piece of paper (in fairly small font) and have a few laminated copies. Supporting documents are scanned to a thumb drive.

Copies of both the laminated sheet and thumb drive are:
    • In our safe
    • In each of our Go Bags
    • With my sister and son
    OPSEC
    • Account numbers and key information on the laminated sheet are encrypted with a fairly simple cypher.
    • Thumb drives require a password to access.
    • All copies are stored in fairly secure locations.

After looking at the form ask yourself:
    • Do you have all this information readily available?
    • Does your spouse have it or know where to find it?
    • Does another family member you trust?
    • As you are packing food, shelter, guns, etc. to evacuate will you have time to gather all this financial information?
      • Note it took me a couple of weekends to gather the underlying data and record it on my single page cheat sheet.

Try to stay away from what could more likely create a situation.
This. If I read it right cigs/booze although being fair barter stock to me is just not a good idea.
bartering opens you up to others. Some may not be honorable and if SHTF for real I believe trust and honor will vanish to straight up surviving

I personally would not bother stocking items I would not use for the sole purpose of bartering them. I would rather use the money and space toward items that my family will need. And like CM above, I have no desire to let anyone else know what I have or to barter unless it is an absolute necessity.
