This event is Saturday november 26 11pm to 3am meet out infront of the vogue.

    [/QUOTE]
WHY: As the result of several violent robberies and sexual attacks in the Broad Ripple Village, we would like to draw public attention to the importance of carrying a firearm. We would also like to send a message to the criminals that perpetrate these crimes that they are playing with fire when they commit these cowardly crimes.

THE WHERE AND WHAT: The plan is that we will meet outside the Vogue. We will be carrying holstered handguns in open carry. At that time we will distribute our informational packets (things like Gun Permit Applications and locations of gun stores) and break off into small groups of 2-3 and walk around the bar areas of the strip and talking to all who are interested about the need for responsible adults to become licensed to carry a handgun. A group of even a dozen activists could wind up being a decent spectacle and draw lots of attention to this important cause including media coverage. Just imagine if we could mobilize 2 dozen!

WHO: This event is open to all people who can legally carry a handgun in the State of Indiana. Those supporters who cannot are also welcome to help distribute gun permit applications. This event is strictly a pro-carry, pro-second amendment event. Signs are welcome (ASK ME HOW TO GET A GUN PERMIT!) < good one! Alcohol consumption by volunteers/activists is strongly discouraged/forbade.

Everyone will need to dress warm and be ready to talk to the public about current issues, especially recent attacks in Broadripple and the importance of females to either carry or be accompanied by someone who does. Here is some reading in case you havent been following the robbery and sexual assault stories:

I'll be out of town, so I won't be in attendance. That being said, I both live and work in the Village, and make it a point to OC as much as possible. I haven't gotten any negative feedback yet.

Fantastic idea!!! I would like to do something like that in Evansville. Unfortunately/fortunately we don't have a really high repeat crime area. We seem to be having scattered armed robberies all around town. I'd love to be there but can't. If this gets to be a regular thing I'll go out of my way to make one after Thanksgiving or Christmas. Again, beautiful idea.

I see a group arrest coming out of this. Cops in Broad Ripple are extremely anti gun (more than normal).

Guy will hook you up with a defense. Hard to be arrested for obeying the law unless they call it an unsanctioned protest or whatever, but then they just tell you to leave first

An idea...how about trying to reach out to the bar owners in Broad Ripple, and see if you could organize some sort of escort service for those female patrons who would like to have an escort to their vehicle. You could provide the bar owners/management with a main contact number (cell) where they would call/text the bar/address/first name of the girl who would like an escort. Your group would dispatch 2+ escorts to walk her safely to her car.

    Thoughts?

I think anything above what was posted would be one hell of a liability problem. Can you imagine offering a bar employee an "escort" to their vehicle, she/he gets mugged or shot at anyway and they come back at you and say, "You offered to SAFELY escort me to my car and I trusted you." I wouldn't put myself in that situation for anything. Now just letting people know you are on the sidewalk and they understand you aren't responsible for their safety, yeah, that might fly.

Understand your point and thanks for bringing it up. My college used to offer a safety escort service where volunteers would be on call to escort female students to and from areas of campus after hours. Perhaps those students would be covered by the college's liability policy? What would happen if a student would decide to not only sue the college but also that fellow student?

The Guardian Angels offer escorts in cities all over the US. Would each of them be liable individually if something happened?

    Just thinking out loud here...

Im close enough to participate, but on the fence.

Getting arrested, even if I'm later cleared is not my idea of fun. I'll keep my eye out and let you know if I'll participate.... Leaning towards no though.

Put it on the Calendar, its a busy weekend. Will see if I can break free or not.

Don't really worry about being arrested, not doing anything illegal.

I'm going to try to attend this. I'm not concerned about arrest, as there is no illegal activity going on, and this is more about making a statement to the scum of the area than it is to the police. The downside is that this is on a weekend where we have a lot of family in from out of town and doing an evening event like this might not go over too well. On the other hand, several of us have carry permits in either this state or a state that Indiana reciprocates with, so if I can convince the others to attend, we could bring as many as 4 along.

To be honest though, there will probably be a lot of partying among the family that weekend and I don't want to cap a night of drinking with an armed walk, so chances of my getting them to attend is not good. I'll still keep it on the calendar in the event we can do it. I do like the idea.

Kirk will be here soon. And he'll relate his OC experience in broadripple.

But maybe things have changed since then.

Understood. I believe if you offer a service, even if free, there is an implication that what you offer will do what you say it will. You might google up "college safety excorts" and "Curtis Sliwa guardian angels liability" and see what each says. I don't know. Also if an "event" is planned and advertised, even by word of mouth, those who participate better be sure there will be no questionable conduct by themselves. And what happens if someone is offended by your "show of force" and gets in somebodies face? What if there is a weapon drawn or even fired? These are all things that have to be carefully thought through.
