Do you have to do some kind of special ceremonial stuff when you retire them? And is it for each one, or the group or...?

When we have visitors, like Scouts or a school group, we disassemble the first flag. Read a story about each stripe, and then a story for the field of stars, throw them in the fire one at a time.
Then the rest we throw in.
We retire HUNDREDS, so we can't disassemble all.
But, we have a grate over the fire, so they don't go on the ground, even in the fire.

But today it was just 5 of us. And 4 of us were family members.
So, we didn't do the ceremony.
We cleaned up the fire pit, lit it, and started putting in flags.
We had a large pile. After three hours we were maybe 3/4 of the way through them when we got tired.
So we burned the leaves and called it a day.
We need to clean the ashes out of the pit next week.

Very cool. But I can see how that would get tedious doing one at a time like that.

The problem is, people want to just start loading them in, and it only burns on the outside.
So we get this big ball of gunk.
Then we have to go in with metal poles and break it up to get it all to burn.

Then we get them ginormous flags.
You can't just dump it on the fire, you'll choke it out.
So you start feeding the flag onto the grate.
Too fast, you put the fire out.
Too slow, it starts to come up the flag.

My Dad thought we retired more than 600 flags.
The Fire Dept, Police, and some VFW post/American Legion Posts bring them in.
And we have a place by the door for people to drop off flags needing to be retired.
