Europeans can say what they want, but we use metric and standard interchangeably depending upon what suits us. For instance:

    Metric-
    Space travel
    Medicine (of all sorts)
    Vehicles made after 1979
    Some commercial construction
    Military everything...except uniforms

    Standard-
    Weather
    Cooking
    Old vehicles and tractors
    Some commercial construction and residential
    The fun weapons

Losers have to stick to a single system because they aren't intellectually agile.

Our kids all had LOTR read to them before they were allowed to watch any of the movies. All enjoyed it.
You want tough? Try "Bleak House" by Dickens or "Atlas Shrugged."

Wait until you mention something measured in degrees and someone asks if that is metric or standard degrees.

I almost laughed, then I realized they were completely serious.
I just said that all degrees are standard unless you are talking about temperatures. I got a blank stare for too long, then "Oh, you mean Celsius?"

My dad gave me all 3 lord of the rings books, and told me after you can read these and tell me the story I will get you an Atari. He grilled me not just on the story, but the why of the characters actions. I did get an Atari. I was 10.

We had reading time every night growing up. It was not considered a punishment. I grew up from a young age reading Clark,Larry Niven,Douglas Adams,Herbert,Asimov,Ann McCaffrey,Marion Bradley ect. Our house had walls of books,a habit I have kept as an adult.
My stepmother also headed a department at the local libary. So books were always available.

I read "The Hobbit" 2 or 3 times, and the LOTR trilogy probably 4 or 5 times. And I still enjoy the movies when they're shown on TV. I also read Tolkien's "The Silmarillion" which was published posthumously by his children I believe. Not that one was slow in the beginning. Like the Bible, there were a lot of "begats" at the beginning to set the stage so to speak. :):

I read a lot. Burned through Atlas Shrugged and liked it. Have read all the LOTR as well, very well done.
Working on an almost 1,000 page annotated book of all 4 novels and 56 stories of Sherlock Holmes by Conan Doyle. Book is 12"by 10" and small print.
One of my favorite series are the Dune books by Brian Herbert, all 13 including pre and sequels.. They can be hard to keep track of the characters but to me they are a good read.
