Since 1979 the USA has recognized Taiwan as part of China. We have still not recognized Taiwan as a country, though the calls to have gotten louder over the last year. We do not have an embassy in Taiwan, but a non profit called the" American institute of Taiwan".

The state department has some new priorities in Taiwan, according to their request for the non profit AIT.

My experience has been that a whole lot of business makes a stop in Taiwan before moving on to the mainland. Maybe they pay protection money to somebody.

Supporters of lincoln and his blue bellies in the war of northern aggression should be fine with China's position on this.

Following quote from link is how I see what the situation is.

"Xi ’s dire-sounding warning, issued in connection with reports that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi plans to go to Taiwan, suggests either that Xi Jinping perceives Biden to be so weak that he can push him around or that China’s internal problems are so severe that the Communist Party must create an external crisis to distract the Chinese people. In the worst case, both are true."

But the people of Taiwan don't exactly help themselves. You can't get a clear majority of them to support a declaration of independence, because they're afraid of losing their trade ties with China. The mainland is their biggest trading partner, and like much of the world, they'd rather be prosperous than free.

I suspect it also has something to do with an adversary which has the world's largest military only a couple of hundred miles from your shore. And the Chinese know that they don't have much to fear from Biden (and even less to worry about from Harris).

If China just stops selling us any goods, and blockades Taiwan so they can't sell us anything either, our military would collapse almost immediately. I suspect that China is prodding Putin to do more in Ukraine so we will deplete our stockpiles of weapons and ammo. Can we get the chips and material we need to replace it? We can't even get the chips we now rely on to make cars.
