Finished putting this rifle back together today. It was my wife's great grandfather's.

It's been kicking around in my gun safe for years and decided to give it a make over.

Re-blued it and applied 8 coats of tung oil, it really turned out nice. Bore scoped it and it's in really good condition, considering how the rifle was stored at G-pa's.

I'll take it out to the range this weekend and do some plinking, along with my magnums. IMG_2993.jpg IMG_2991.jpg

I have very nearly the same project on my agenda. What did you use for the blueing? Mine is down to pretty much bare metal.

    I used Brownells Oxpho Blue.

I was going to have it hot tanked, but my guy is way backed up.

You happy with the result vs. what could have been? I've never really seen anything but a factory blue job so I don't even know the difference first person.

I am happy with the results. If it was a rifle that worth more, I would've had it hot tanked.

I've done a couple of milsurps too with the Oxpho Blue and they turned out great.

Preparing the barrel, I start out with 00 steel wool and gun oil and a lot of elbow time.

Then I progress to 0000 steel wool and wood finishing finer scratch pads for the trouble areas.

Once I get it nice, clean & shiny, I clean with Acetone. Ready for bluing.

Before I start to apply the bluing, I heat the barrel up in front of my propane fireplace.

The bluing applies better and more evenly when the metal is nice and warm vs. cold.

Stevens 83A, good gun. Unique in the way the bolt won't return home until you release the trigger.

    Good job on the refinish.
