Unless you like making franken smiths lol
Back in the day (BG) Before Glock, I started out in Las Vegas getting a S&W Mdl 59 Fresno California Police Department trade in, then along came a Mdl 39, 639, and oh what a turd, the 2x4 handled Mdl 459.
All gone now, a Mdl 5903, and 5906 were once in my hands too, but only the Mdl 5906 survives, as it was passed down to my son.
Glocks took over around 1992, and I recently bought a S&W M&P .40 full size from a member here, so I can add that to the wife's S&W Shield in the house.
But oh what memories the 1980's had for me and my Smiths.
I was taking to a retired Minneapolis cop who spoke fondly of carrying a S&W 645 for many years. Just before his retirement he said they offered to issue him an M&P. The only condition was once he was qualified with the M&P he would no longer be able to carry his 645. He told them, no thanks. Funnily enough though, since retirement he has started carrying an M&P pretty exclusively.
The 6906 doesn't fit the chart though.WOW! Utterly fantastic summary chart!
I’ve got a 5926 passed down to me. Love it so much
Thats from the smith forum. That's pretty much all of them as Im not sure if the 4th edition S&W bible is 100% correct.
I thought it would probably be old news.
I was looking for info while talking to a 90 yr. old member here that I keep it touch with & needed a quick reference & it came up.
I was telling him how happy I was to have picked up the 6946 after letting 3 other 3rd gens slip away & needed the date of them.
I also mention the SW 422 I picked up since that is about all he can shoot anymore & he mentioned it must be a "newer" one b/c of the 3 digits.
I laughed & said even though I'm almost 70, there is a generational difference gap there in referring toa "newer" date of manufacture of a gun.
I would go no higher than 400.Ran across a Model 908 at the LGS. It's in pretty decent shape with only minor holster wear. Comes with 2 extra 8rd magazines for $457.00 OTD.
Good deal?
Yeah I thought it was a bit high so I took a pass on it. It was in pretty good shape and it came with 2 extra factory magazines. I was tempted but I thought better of it. I'm pretty sure the LGS won't go that low.I would go no higher than 400.
The S&W forum has more knowledge about date made, or you can call S&W and they may be able to hook you up.Ran across a super nice 39-2 Nickel with S/N "A315nnn" blued controls, 1 mag, original grey box and paperwork at $699. I decided to put some $ to hold it. Didn't look like it had been fired much at all if any. I then looked on GunBroker for similar ones and think I got a pretty good deal.
Don't currently own a 39 but it sure felt good in my hand. Any idea of it's year manufactured?
Any links to additional mags that would work? The one with it had a blue follower.
