I have a Browning semi auto takedown that is designed for shorts only and have killed some squirrels with it. I have 2 uppers(bbl/stock assemblies) for it. One cut down to 16" with a scope and another with the full length bbl.and the iron sights.

Sounds nice. I started to search for shorts magazine for my S&W 15-22, but didn't find anything. I don't know enough about how that works, but figure it's more the magazine, not the ramp for autos?
These mags from Volquartsen have a brass insert in the front that makes the magazine chamber smaller. If there are other modifications I'm unaware of it.

FWIW Ive had two 10/22s (1970 and 1985 models) that would not run CCI quiet or new Rem CB ammo in semi auto.
They did however , work fine as straight pull bolt actions.
    Neither had bolt work done.

Winchester model 74 in .22 short. That is my favorite semi .22 hands down.

Best I ever had was a Remington bolt action that shot everything just fine.
Had it cut back to minimum legal length. Took the stock down about four or five inches and refit the butt plate. Used a Bushnell 2x7. Bent the forehead plate of a light into a U to fit the bottom of the forestock. Experimented with quite a few mad cap designs to preclude animals being lost in the night. Used shorts quite a lot, with a small Philips screwdriver pressed into the hollow point.

Run sub sonic Long Rifle ammo and your 1022 becomes a straight pull mag fed bolt action.

    No mods needed

Reg .22 shorts still break the sonic barrier. And they dont work well in a reg 1022 mag
I'm going to try and find some subsonic .22 LR rounds for my S&W 15-22.

I have some Aguilar Colibri shorts at 590 fps. Will they cycle the .22 short auto models mentioned here, or do they only work with non-subsonic shorts?

I've never tried anything that slow in any of my autoloaders. Can't hurt to try, but I'd be careful about lodging one in the barrel. Slowest I've shot is probably the 800 fps, so it is subsonic. The Browning SA22 shorts-only model has a longer barrel even than the LR models, I think mine is 21.5", so that's a lot of barrel to clear with 590 fps, especially since many barrels may have slight restrictions at some point in the barrel.

Yes, definitely always be aware of a “Squib” when shooting lo speed ammo in any firearm.
The Henry’s I referred to earlier both have 20” barrels.
Both shoot the 420fps Colibri’s with no issues.
    (Chrono between 375 an 450fps.)
Super Colibri about 720fps and much louder.
Neither of the above are recommended for semiauto use.

Here’s a photo of my Aguila 22 shorts.
1095fps. Never tried them in a semi but at that speed, I would think they would cycle a semi.
And yes they can be loud. Much much much louder than a regular 20gr “Colibri”.

    Never heard of “Colibri Shorts”.

I would think shooting a slow round like 590fps would exit but most definitely wont cycle the rifle. (I have one also but didn’t want to take the chance and have a Squib).
Plus not to mention possible failure to feed problems for a LR designed system/mag.

I've had several Model 74s and a couple that was chambered for shorts only, great rifles and relatively inexpensive. If you want to spend a little more money the browning take down or a Model 24 Remington (same gun) are great 22 short only rifles. My Marlin 39A always worked well with shorts but they have gotten pricey.

As a kid I shot a bunch of .22 shorts out of a bolt action, tube fed Marlin. That tube holds a LOT of shorts. I think it was a model 81 It was a common $25 pawn shop rifle back then, I am sure they are more now.

I reviewed one of the Rossi Rio Bravo lever guns in 22lr and it shoots 22shorts without a hitch. Great little rifle that wont break the bank..

Thanks. I subscribed and watched the .22 video and your 2021 EDC one. I like the synthetic for a grab, scratch and shoot pest rifle. The shorts capability is nice along with the price, will probably go for it. Maybe a Henry evil roy after that, or one of the other nice .22s mentioned in this thread that are $$ on GunBroker.

I have a friend that has the Edward D. Jones office in Scottsburg, haven't seen him in years but plan to.

I have basically the same J frame, 340 pd. They won't hardly print in an OWB leather holster either.
