I was at a pumpkin patch earlier today with my wife. I didn’t see how how it occurred, but a middle-aged woman had gotten injured at the place where the hayride wagon picks you up. Judging from the trail of bloody steps leading to where she was being treated by staff, it bled a lot, and very quickly. It appeared they put a tourniquet on her thigh, used a shirt as a makeshift compression bandage, and were elevating it. There was still a puddle of blood near her that would rival some stabbings and shootings I’ve responded to. This farm was out in the hills and it took quite a long time for an ambulance to come.

Even something as benign as going to pick pumpkins with the kids can turn into a major incident. The staff and at least one bystander were at least able to cobble together enough material to slow the bleeding, or she may have been in bad shape by the time an ambulance responded.

Always carry basic life-saving gear! I started carrying a 5.11 two-banger as a “man purse” and had considered putting some medical gear in it. I had not done so yet, but today sped up that process for me.

I keep a first aid and a trauma kit in my GHB.
The stop bleed agent gets replaced every couple years and both kits stay in my work van until I need it when using my other vehicle.
I have just enough training to possibly save a life and then get my ass sued.................I definitely need more training.

Fortunately Indiana has a good samaritan law which prevents that.
