I'm going to be building a bolt gun soon, but as I build and rebuild more firearms across many platforms, I think the time has come to actually buy a proper barrel vise and action wrench. I know some have very specific tools, but there are many with interchangeable dies to accomodate different barrels and actions respectively. Anyone have opinions? Currently I've just cut walnut blanks for what I've needed to make blocks.

Aluminum v-blocks for jaws with a business card over them to protect barrel finish.

Wheeler barrel vise is serviceable, if they are still available. Make your own if not.

If you have the capability make your own action wrench using the Brownells pattern as the basis for interchangeable heads.

If you just need a generic 700 pattern and flat bottom pattern - the Wheeler stuff is decent enough if still available.

The Northland Shooters Supply action wrench is a popular and quality tool. I have used mine to install barrels on a couple of Savage actions and a Bighorn (700 footprint) action. These were Savage thread barrels with the nut. It has flats for mounting in a vise.

I have a Wheeler barrel vise and have used it once or twice but it really wasn't necessary. I think it would be more useful for dealing with a shouldered barrel like on a Remington 700. It's a solid tool for the money.
