I hear on an almost daily basis that a vote for a third party is a vote for Obama. I’ve read posts on this forum saying this, I’ve heard it from every conservative talk radio host, I’ve heard from political pundits, and I’ve heard in person from others who do not like Obama. The common theme amongst people making this statement is that they don’t like either candidate but they dislike Romney slightly less. I’m inclined to agree but here’s my problem. Romney is a big government R, Obama is a big government socialist. Everyone says Obama is driving us straight off a cliff into socialism and Romney will drive us toward a slightly different cliff and maybe not as rapidly. Logically everyone should be terrified and vote for Romney. Where I differ from many people is that I think the congress is better suited to defend against Obama’s garbage than they are against Romney’s. My point, R’s in congress are not going to vote for Obama’s socialism, they’ve already proven that. They stand in the way of everything he tries to do. The R’s won’t do this with Romney and I speculate that the D’s would be willing to work with Romney on a larger scale than the R’s working with Obama. Since we already know that one of these guys is going to president, I sincerely hope no matter who it is remains a lame duck. But that’s a sidebar.

I will not be voting for either of them. Wait, that means I’m voting for Obama right? I should just go and “put on my team Obama shirt” cause everyone on the radio/tv/forums wisely states I’m now voting for Obama? Why can’t I turn around and say with the exact same logic that a vote for an independent or third party is a vote for Romney? Everyone treats this concept like it’s gospel and it’s not, it’s not even logical. Not voting for Romney and also not voting for Obama is a net zero for both with respect to each other. A vote for a third party or independent is exactly that. If an independent is ever going to be a viable option it has to start somewhere and since we only get to do this thing once every 4 years it needs to start like yesterday.

That’s mostly it, I get sick of hearing people agree that we need more than two parties but this is not the election to worry about that, this one is too pivotal….spare me. Please, why is it that the people saying this are the older generation who have been supporting the two party system for their whole life? Every election is too pivotal. If these same people had starting voting on principal 20 or 30 years ago when they were my age then we might actually have more than a 2 party system where both parties are trying to kill off liberty and grow the government. In 20 or 30 years when we still have a 2 party system and have the same problems except worse and even more “pivotal”, it won’t be because I blindly voted for an R instead of a D my whole life.

It's the self fulfilling prophecy, that is the two party system. "You're throwing your vote away if you vote outside of D or R, so might as well vote for the lesser of two evils"
With that philosiphy your are still voting for someone that you feel is evil. There will never be a change in the two party system until people start voting for who they truly feel should be in office, rather than voting for a party "because they are going to win anyway". <<< To me, that is throwing a vote away.

The media feeds right into it everyday and helps to bolster the D & R stance by feeding the general public all that same old rhetoric about how only a D or R is going to win, just as in the examples you pointed out above.

    tl;dr: I agree with you.

My vote for a third party is a protest vote, and just because someone is going to vote for the lesser of two evils doesn't mean they are right, it just means they don't have the character to vote their principles.

As a protest vote, voting third party also serves to moderate the extremist tendencies of either main party because they know the more extreme they are the more of their centrist voters are going to vote third (or fourth, fifth...) party.

Every whiner out there who can't stand the thought that not everyone thinks exactly like them will tell you that if you don't believe every fool thing they believe that you're just wasting time. I don't waste my time with those people ;)

Voting for Romney is like voting for Obama.
Just because someone has an (R) at the end of their name does not make them conservative.
    Sheep don't understand this concept.

You hear it because its true.

It's like "Quit telling me that water is wet. I don't want to hear anymore about wet water."

You still have the right to do what you want but the effect of what that action will do to the outcome of the election remains the same. Sorry. That's just the way it is.

PS I would not have searched you out to tell you this but you brought it up. I voted Libertarian rather than Bush or Clinton in 1992 and we got Waco and the Assault Weapons Ban two years later.

It is true. I'd rather drive off that cliff slowly, because at leaet we have more time to turn around. Conservatives have Romney's ear, guess who has Obama's ear, anti-American Communists that's who. Take your choice. A vote for a third party is a vote that may as well not be cast. You may as well stay at home, which is a terrible waste of a conservative vote. We must unite to win!!!

Then don't vote for a socialist running under the Republican ticket.

It's only a waste if you're ok with maintaining the two party establishment forever.

If the GOP wants my vote, which is going to RP, then why not pull their political heads out of their a**es and give us a good candidate to vote for?? This mentality of voting for the lessor evil has strayed to far. Start giving me a good quality republican that is for reduced government, pro-constitution, and doesn't flip flop on issues and the GOP will have my vote.......oh wait all those things are exactly what Ron Paul stands for!

+1 for the OP, rep will be inbound when I get home tonight for being a free thinker.
