And I bet you don't stomp on the flag when you retire it.
    Nope.
Try pretty hard to not put it on the ground either.
But those big ones are hard to do when we only have a few people working.

We don't throw the flag onto the fire on the ground.
We build the fire, and then grate made up of pipes goes over it.
Flags go on the grate, and burn off of it.

I always wondered....is there a specific method to properly do this or is it more about the ceremony?
The most important thing would be, doing it respectfully.
There are several ceremonies you can find online.
We have a ceremony where we 'disassemble' a flag step by step, and have something to read for each step.
Basically, remove one stripe at a time. Read a passage.
After the stripes, then the blue field. Read a passage.

Then we will feed the rest in without 'disassembly', it would take too long.
We had something around 50 bags filled.

We sometimes find a good flag, and keep it.
Sometimes a coffin flag gets thrown out. Probably someone cleaning out their parents home after death, and have a flag from a family member ex-military.
We sometimes perform funeral service for someone that can't get through the government red tape, we donate them one of these flags.
Some of the flags are from businesses, that just replace the flag automatically after a year or so. If it's in good condition, save it for later.

But most are faded or tattered.
When they are left up in a windy rainy storm, the ends of the larger flags are said to exceed 200mph as they 'SNAP'. With the weight of the water, it tears the end up pretty good.

When we have Scouts or schoolchildren, we'll take a group to the side, and teach them how to fold it.
And we'll add in some history.
After all, we can't have 20 kids on the fire at the same time.
And kids doing nothing get bored.

I was telling the Scouts that I had learned to fold the flag as a young Scout in the 70s, and one of the moms said, "I wasn't even born in the 70s".
Yikes. Great. Cause I didn't feel old before.

I would say that defines respect. Well done act and all the rest. Your honorable intent and great care is what differentiates It from a disrespectful action at the hands of protestors.

Some ceremonies place the flag in the fire, while folded.
We find this a problem. You get a big bunch of goo with the synthetic flags.
    Unfolded seems to go better.

    The fire gets hot.

Learning to properly handle the flag was an important teaching for us Scouts growing up in the 70's.

We all know how silly he is though.
That must be the P.C. description... lmao.

Snap - fun fact, saw a violation tag at the neighbors so looked it up. 72 hours to mow and if not $100/day fine according to city code. Guess that motivated him to jump on the tractor. Makes zero sense the lazy F has a working JD tractor and can't mow once a week. Even last year when they had a service it only came ever 2 weeks which any reasonable person knows is not enough to maintain a lawn properly. At least he didn't blow it into my yard and start a confrontation. Still didn't mow the front easement either so he i don't think he gets it.

And speaking of flags, and D.bags. My other neighbor the C. has had her tattered and torn and faded flag at half mast for like a year now. I wish someone would knock on her door and slap the **** out of her when she answered.

also you don't repurpose flags into clothing or use them as such it's disrespectful. look it up.

Can't we re purpose the flags as opposed to burning them?

It seems very boomerish to burn a perfectly good cloth when we could make art or hats or bandanas...

I dunno, maybe it's just me..
    .
    Cloth is made every day.
    It's not the Great Depression.

Very boomerish of me. But that would be against flag code also.
