well, if you HAVE to move to illinois, don't register your guns with the state, that would be absolutely rediculous, leave them here with me in NWI, i can watch them for you, keep them cleaned and oiled, and we can work out visitation for you to come play with them!! happy to help!!

This is a depressing thread. Hard to believe so much changes when you cross the magical line between our great state and (insert favorite slang derogatory word for Illinois).

The state of Illinois doesnt have gun registration. Chicago is another matter

OP, definitely look into NWI. The savings on property taxes will more than pay for any commute.

You don't have to register any of your guns in IL, but you have to have an up to date FOID card. If your card expires you are a criminal, don't let your card expire. Better yet, move to NW Indiana and commute to Chicago like I do.

Yes & no as others have already said. 99.9% of IL does not have the register guns. However if you live in the City of Chicago you do have to register your guns with them + get a handgun permit from them if you have handguns. Lots of paperwork + fees + a handgun class that you have to take.

Chicago? I'd live in NWI and commute. I understand there's a train, even.

The South Shore (http://www.nictd.com/) has several stops in NWI that go into downtown Chicago and is what many of us use daily to get to work. Get on the train, take a 35 to 40 min nap and get to work.

NWI or WI depending on what part of Chicago. Besides having no carry option - you will be taxed to death......please think this through.

    ^This!
Your taxes personal income tax, property taxes and sales tax are much higher in IL then IN. It is much better money wise to earn a "chicago salary" and live in NWI where the taxes are cheaper.

What is the tax hit for working in Chicago, but living in IN? Do you still have to pay IL Income Tax?

My paycheck gets "hit" for FED, IL state and IN state taxes!
IL and IN broke their tax agreement they had a while back so now both take from my check. At the end of the day I typically owe IL under $50 and IN gives me a credit for what IL takes.

The way it works is if you work in Illinois, you pay Illinois income tax. The amount you pay Illinois is credited against the amount you owe Indiana. That all changes for taxes on tax year 2011. Illinois' income tax went from 3% to 5% and Indiana's tax rate is at 3.4% so you probably wont owe Indiana anything.

I live in Indiana and work in Illinois. I had to pay Illinois its 3% and then pay Indiana the remaining 0.4%. It'll be interesting this year...

    THIS THIS THIS!!!

Have to agree...commute to Chicago. Did it for 13 years. But living here is substantially cheaper, food, gas, tax-wise, among other things than moving to that state!!

Telecommute. That way you don't even have to set foot in that god forsaken place.

the tax laws get very messy if you're telecommuting, especially if you live in one state and the employment address is in another state. you also need an "office" set up in your home that is separate from the rest of your home, i.e. used for business purposes only

Not so. No different than if you drove to Chicago. Tax law allows extra deductuion for office in the home.

    Win!

you still have to build a dedicated office and phone for your home and your employer needs to grant you that request to telecommute. While there are tax deductions, that is what makes it messier because you have more stuff to fill out.

Move to Chicago, OP. You have no alternative.

If its toward the Northern part, you could even consider someplace right across the border, near Kenosha, Wisconsin.

Its still Wisconsin, which is bad, but not as bad as Illinois.
Please don't lump us with those commies. If you haven't been paying attention, WI has changed a lot in the last 3 years. ;)
