Went yesterday in Kosciusko. Thought I would see if any early ones were out. Just a walk in the woods - zero found. My property seems to like 1st week of May from past years findings. Hope the weather cooperates - cold nights forecasted.

The OG and I spent a couple of hours out in Owen county last evening. Found a nice little mess of grays.

Can't think of a better excuse to wander in the woods.

Got 8 lbs. worth today.

I went again today in Kosciusko. Found 4 - very small (no more than an inch tall). I flagged them and covered with some leaves. I'll check back on them this weekend.

I hit 4 trees today that have yet to produce, this was the first day they made fungus. All on ridges. they should be good next week. Need a rain on Sunday.

Big Red False Morel

The big red false morel belongs to a group of poisonous mushrooms. It has a reddish brown, convoluted, brainlike cap and a whitish stalk that is chambered inside. It grows singly or in groups in mixed woods.

I harvested a bunch of small early greys from my little 7 ac. woods. With next week's weather predicted to drop again into sub-freezing temperatures, I wanted to snag something. Who can predict the future ?

Split, and in the salt bath. Tomorrow .... a feast of the beast !
