Inherited this gun. I believe 8x57 Mauser because got a couple boxes of OLD ammo with it.

Gun itself has no marks other than one small "U" or "C" depending on how you view it.

I think it may be unfired. My dad had it from at least the mid to late 50s and know he did not buy new.

Any of you Norman Einsteins have any info? I know almost nothing.

Also 54 on magazine floor plate.

The bolt is clearly from a 98 Mauser. It looks to me like the follower has the remnants of a WWII inspector marking. I think it is a heavily sporterized German Kar 98k, possibly with a bolt from a 98a. Could be something else with a follower from another rifle. Like others said, photos show specific details without enough of an overall view. The description of a "U" could be an Imperial era inspection mark, but I don't see it in the photos? The alterations are very well done I might add, at least given what we can see.

You duped your own thread 8 minutes after the first? I don't think I remember ever seeing that before.

Unfortunately, that doesn't really clear it up any. The lack of markings still leaves me thinking it is a military rifle heavily modified into a sporting rifle. Otherwise, why remove the markings? However, the stock does not look like a modified military stock. So, all I can guess is a military 98 Mauser action set into a civilian stock, but more of a guess than a certainty.

The follower is a mystery unto itself, why remove all of the other markings, but leave those? The bolt looks to be from a German Kar98a or Polish Kar98 variant so perhaps that is what it once was, modified into a sporting rifle, and the follower replaced at a later date for some unknown reason.

Gun appears to be unfired or at least been fired only a few times in it's life.

I know for a fact it has not been fired since at least 1960 and perhaps earlier. My dad never fired any of his rifles during the time he was married (1957)

Beautiful rifle, and I love the set trigger! I'd love to shoot that one. Is that a rib running along the top of the barrel? Looks like it has a dovetail cutout for a scope mount. If it only has the one, then it's probably for a European type mount.

I love the old sporters that were so much more than taking a hacksaw to the barrel and cutting down a military stock.

This Arisaka Type 38 sporter (that I got from rob63) is one of my favorite rifles.

And here are a couple more. Berthier 1907/15 made by Remington (although it actually does have a cut down military stock):

And an Argentine Model 1909 Mauser re-chambered to 30-06 with a super-light trigger:

Yes it has a rib and the cutout.

I remember as a kid that it had a leather strap but it rotted away through the years.

Where is Mauser Mike? I will bet he would know what the original animal was. All I know is that is one fine Sporter.

I am sure your father would be glad to know you have as much interest in his rifle as he would have hoped for...
