...U.S. Air Defenses ‘Not Fully Operational’ Before Strike Killed American in Syria, Officials Say

The United States launched retaliatory attacks in eastern Syria about 13 hours after the drone strike. Officials are also investigating what went wrong with the defense system.

    March 24, 2023Updated 5:05 p.m. ET
WASHINGTON — The main air defense system at a coalition military base in northeast Syria was “not fully operational” when a suspected Iranian drone hit the installation, killing a U.S. contractor and injuring six other Americans, two U.S. officials said on Friday.
It was unclear why the system was not fully functional and what difference that made in defending the base from the attack on Thursday. Brig. Gen. Patrick Ryder, the Pentagon spokesman, said on Friday that the air defense’s radar was working but he declined to discuss any other details of the system, citing operational security and an investigation by the military’s Central Command.

It was also unclear whether the attackers had detected that vulnerability and exploited it, or just happened to send the drone at that time, said officials who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss the ongoing investigation...

It appears the gaps in our fences are being discovered.

Air defenses not fully operational in an area that is hostile toward the US, I don't understand how this could happen. Actually I do, we are spread too thin, extremely weak administration & focused on all the wrong things in our armed forces.

I understand how "some" involvement overseas can work in our best interest, need to work on getting our own backyard cleaned up before working on everyone elses though.

Just because they can create enough fissile material in 12 days doesn't mean they'll have a functioning and deliverable weapon in 12 days. There's a LOT more to it than a pile of fissile, weapons grade Plutonium, some of which I CANNOT discuss here (or anywhere else). Suffice that you've got to reliably turn that pile near instantaneously into a "critical mass", otherwise it just fizzles out, albeit spewing extremely dirty radioactive and exceptionally chemically poisonous stuff around. Plutonium is extremely lethal chemically, even without considering its nuclear radiation component. A minuscule amount kills. North Korea had the "critical mass" problem for some time plus a reliable delivery issue. Since been solved, for the most part, but it took a while. How fast Iran can get there would be speculation, but it's certainly a lot longer than two weeks.

Some are saying attack "near" the US Consulate in Iraq, some are saying an attack "on" the US Consulate. If it was a direct attack from Iranian territory on the US Consulate, rather than by proxies, this seems like a significant escalation.
