Nixon resigned to escape an impeachment trial. Impeaching a former official is pointless, although I think there should be a similar mechanism where a former offical could be barred from holding office again. Aside from that, if a former office-holder’s conduct is criminal, let the legal justice system prosecute zim.

I hear what you are saying, but step back for a moment and consider the full weight of what you (and probably many others) are thinking about.

By passing a law or "mechanism" to bar someone from holding public office again that would be giving the government, which is always the "current" power to directly refuse the will of the people who are voting to elect someone they support.

As our culture, not just our county, but our culture is based upon the will of the people being fulfilled the more power you give the government to say "no" to a potential candidate the less power the citizenry has.

We already have term limits for the president. The president is unique in this limitation because that office is held by one (1) person, so 1/3 of the governmental power is in a single persons hands. I think this is the reason so many folks are Okay with term limits for the president. But going beyond just term limits we start to shift the balance of power away from the people.

I am not saying you are wrong, but this is something that we should take great care in considering before pursuing. That's my only thought.

    Regards,

    Doug

The Constitution does allow an official convicted after impeachment to be barred from holding public office again. It is optional and it is included in the impeachment articles passed by the House. In fact, blocking Trump from running in 2024 is the only reason Pelosi is pushing for conviction.

Well of course it's the reason. A Senate trial wouldn't even be conducted in time to remove him from office.

Not the ONLY reason. Just A reason. She's doing this for the stage and because she's a vindictive, vainglorious (b)witch as are most all Democrats.

I think one could say that baring Trump from running again is the only practical reason. But, the main purpose, isn't a practical reason. It's because she's a ****ing bitch, and she can't stand Trump. I mean, why else would you have commemorative pens made up for signing the first articles of impeachment? How ****ing petty can a person be?

So yeah, trying to figure out if you excluded Republicans, on purpose, or if you honestly think they aren’t just as guilty.

    "Guilty"? Yes.

"Just as", not by a long shot, though the criminal, violent assault getting into the Capitol was a down payment in getting there.

Coordinated violent assaults on federal facilities to halt the legitimate operation of the US government happened many, many times over the summer. Numerous government officials publicly gave aid and comfort though their words, actions and lack of actions. Can you say DHS?

None of the above is remotely good for the country and should be condemned by all. Prosecuted.

Allow the goose to do it with impunity, the gander will follow suit.

Anybody that riots, should arrested and prosecuted. No one should get a pass.

So, are the rioters from the summer not being prosecuted or is the media just not reporting it?

To make this as a close as possible to an apples to apples comparison, you'll need to look at arrest AND prosecution data from the firsr blm riots, not after a week of them. We've had exactly one Trump riot not dozens.

Oh come on Man, how are we supposed to keep up the victim based society if you want to apply equal standards to everyone? I think that's racist or something.

Yeah and what happened this summer was not called domestic terrorism even tho it sure as hell was.

That piece of **** soon to be vice president was paying for bail for the mostly peaceful domestic terrorist this summer and now they want unity???? Man I would love to see media if a conservative bailed out those people at the capital.

Politics are different so that means the slap on the wrist is not worthy now like this summer???

Not making an apples to apples comparison so much as pushing back against the narrative that BLM is getting off scot free.

However, if you look at the second link, you can download a CSV file that shows ongoing cases.

I have a feeling Trump protests/riots are just getting started.

Never heard of it. What about the news 99% of America watches? CBS, ABC, NBC, CNN?

Did not hear anything from them?

But you're still comparing 100s or 1000s of blm riots to one Trump riot. It's not possible to do these comparisons.

And honestly it's been surprisingly successful/
Surprisingly successful? The man lasted more than 4 years pitted against the most powerful institutions this country has to offer. Dems, RINOs, FBI, CIA, IRS, just about every other alphabet agency, most career bureaucrats, the MSM, Big Tech, etc ...

Surprisingly successful? That's almost laughable, even for you.

As an American, I'm a little concerned at the effectiveness of all these institutions if faced with a real existential threat.
