I watched it before it was posted here. Just a guy that got in over his head and lacked experience. I can see both sides. But I truly wonder if this was all staged for a you tube video to make $$$. Obviously the cops had better things to do and disliked the rescue. However what I said to my wife… “he is in a woods, he can’t make a fire to heat up water and eat his food?” That is what made me suspect it was all just staged for a you tube video.

So does anyone think he has learned a lesson?

Short story- first time @PhotoNinja and I went to WInter Park to go skiing, we had a day to spend getting acclimated to altitude so we went to a hiking trail in the Arapahoe NF. We didn't have snowshoes, just winter boots, but they weren't needed because the trail was well used by hikers and cross-country skiiers. We hiked up about 1/2-3/4 mile, and she wants to take a picture of the mountains. Seeing how a tree was in the way I say"well just go out there and get the pic!" pointing to a spot about 10 feet off trail. She proceeds to take a step away from the trail and sinks thigh-deep into the snow. HAHA! We got our first experience with mountain snow.

The next time we went out to WP, we rented snowshoes and hiked a trail across from the resort. We got off trail and had a good time of it. I guess we did it wrong, since we didn't have to call SAR.

There have been quite a few in my watch queue lately. Most of them appear to be similar view-mongering.

I use a Zoleo when I head out. I've never even been close to pressing "the button" and I make no bones about being a sub-optimal adventurer. People on backcountry forums self-evacing with broken legs, appendicitis, you name it. Mindset and preparation are the key to wilderness success. If you don't have it, don't go. One of the northeast states tried to pass a rescue bill last year due to the exponential rise of people venturing off trail and hitting the panic button.

Watch some of Jim Bairds videos. Probably more satellite hardware than anyone I know and regularly makes no bones about the fact that if he blows out a canoe, he's got a 700k walk out. One of the few guys to actually have an emergent situation in the Backcountry, self rescue he and his family, and video a bit of the trek for posterity. Mindset is evident the whole way through.

The SOS buttons are for immediately life-threatening emergencies. Not a tuber who got lost on the White River in Hamilton County (true story!) or these social media personalities like Conti, Becker, et al who seem to treat every sojourn as a family park hike.

    Eh, I should stop ranting.

I watch some of Jim. Wasn’t it him and his brother in Alone? Those were some hardcore dudes. That hiker wouldn’t last 5 days on Alone. He barely survive d a day without food…lol.

To answer the original question...he is a dumbass whiner. The time stamps on his messages and his story show that these deputies we're able to hike in from the road and find him in less than an hour. They got from the tops of the "mountain" to him before he could even take down his tent. Why was his career not listed as helicopter landing specialist in the FB post?

The Garmin looks like it did it's job.

Good catch on the time stamps, didn't catch that earlier.

    And, Welcome to INGO!

I would like to point out, since my son works for Garmin and sells a fair amount of those widgets, the hardware and the service Garmin provides seems to have functioned flawlessly.

Tell him I want a TT15 collar GPS combined with a delta collar like spoton or halo.

    Thanks
