Maybe I should make this point clear. I don't have, nor ever had, an MG in my possession, nor do I know of anyone in possession of either a registered or non-registered one. I was asked this question, and not knowing the answer, decided to investigate.

Because it is tax information, the only person that can check is the estate attorney or an heir if no estate exists (with proof of death). If it is not registered ATF will expect to be forfeited.

The only person it can be transfered to after a registree's death is an heir (tax free) or it can be legally sold as part of the estate (taxed).

I have seen guns transfer to heirs up to 8 years after the registered owners death.

I was seriously disappointed when I thought he was actually admitting it on an open forum. :D
Yeah you're right, that would be worse. I wish my grandfather had brought back some historical items when he was in Germany. Not even necessarily firearms.

Very interesting thread and very good info to know! Even though I don't have any of these in my family it may be good info for friends!

Personally I’d hide it for as long as I felt comfortable doing while searching for paperwork. You didn’t know it was illegal until you confirm it doesn’t have papers.
