hornaday 125 sst load for 300 blackout

hey guys... been looking for a good recepie for a hornaday 125 gr.sst for the 300 blackout... i got CFE BLK and IMR 4227 powder. i got the lyman 50th edition load book comin on wednesday... just wondering if anyone had good data for this load. thanks.

I understand wanting to use the powder you have, but it would appear, according to Hodgdon's data, that H110 or Lil' Gun would be better powders for that cartridge/bullet combo. The CFE BLK and IMR 4227 are both sub-2000 fps at maximum loads.

Great bullet with 19.0 gr of h110. Sitting in stand last fall. Buck I wanted didn't show up but nailed coyote at 105 yards clean kill. Skinned him , bullet expanded perfectly.

I shot a bunch of those SST's powered by 4227. I also used it to load up a bunch of loose 158grn gamekings I had. I liked the way they shot and thought they were a great all around load. Shot soft and made nice groups. My range is 150 yrds. Only about a 1-2" drop that far out. Lots of free sources on the net for data.
Want to say it was in the 17 grain range. Had to tap them on the bench a little to settle powder. Ever so slightly compressed. Made a crunch when bullet seated.


Those 30 cal projectiles were so expensive I shot what I had and rebarreled back to .223. All my load data went with all the blackout stuff I sold.

Not to thread-jack but for $14.49 shipped/100 I'm giving these a try for some plinkers... It will be interesting to see how the plating holds up.

UPDATE: Re; Accura 120gr plateds...Just a quick see-how-they-run... 5 at 19.9gr SW-BO at 2.015 coal, 10 at 18.7gr SW-BO 2.025 coal. Tried to get out to our usual 2.100 coal but there was not much in the case. Running our 10.5" w 1-4x on the bench at 100yds. Started at: 8" dinger, 6" dinger, 4" dinger, 3" dinger- finale' 1" piano key. Very impressed for not even trying to dial up a precise load. Didn't break out the chrono. They defiantly sounded different and recoil felt different than our usual 125 Speers or 110 and 123s Noslers. For the $ will be ordering more for plinking rounds. I thought they would have been more dispersed. Pleasantly surprised. YMMV

just an update guys on what i got using 4227 with the sst bullets. i had the best chrono group with a charge of 16.6 and o.a.l of 2.100.... s.d. of 12 with an e.s. of 13. think i'll use it. shot a .400 m.o.a at a 100 yrds. good for deer hunting i would think!

Well... Thats a good question... We like it. I havn't chrono'd any loads yet but its somewhat similar to CFE. Its similar to Accurate 1680- at least thats what I'm reading and using. No cratered primers yet or pressure signs. Its 'clean' (not cleanest).

We ran out of our usual 125gr Horn or Sierra OT-FB mil pull down go-tos so we are trying Accura https://accuraoutdoors.com/product/30-caliber-120gr-spitzer-point-coming-soon/ with pretty good success.

From the bench at 100yds, 10.5" w/ 1-4x20 we are hitting moa pretty regularly as plinkers. 19gr of SW-BO. Only had to go 4 click left on a 1/10 mrad turret from our 0 point.

If you reload and shot 300BO like we do it works great. Now for dear season its back to CFE and Barnes TacTX 110 Black tip.
Oh, and it meters very well. Spherical. We picked up a 8# keg for $144.

sounds like a good powder. I have been using litl gun and it burns so hot, expensive too. I will give this a try, thanks so much you have been a great help. I too am old 66 pretty soon a great hobby for us seniors.

We used to use a lot of LilG... Look at the pressures from LG in some of the loading guides. We found it worked fine but it was harder on gear. Cam pins were showing very evident wear and it was dirtier.

hey guys.. just an update on my load i settled on for the hornaday 125 grain sst for the 300 blackout. i settled on 17.5 grains of 4227 with an oal of 2.100. my chrono work with it was an S.D. of 7 and an E.S of 12. i did 5 different ladder loads and this was the best... grouping at .4 moa at a hundred yards out of my HM Defence 300 blackout with a
barrel lenght of 18" with a 1/8 twist. average velocity was 2106. I think its a keeper!!

yeah.. the HM Defence is a company out of Ohio. I love the gun, i had a choice of 10", 16" or 18" barrel. went with the 18"... thought i could get a little better accuracy and distance. so far so good. ive had it out to 300 yds and the groups were bout 2 1/2 in. not to bad outta a 300 blk. im using a vortex crossfire 2 3x9x50. good scope for the 300 blk.
