My home defense shotgun is the kel tec KSG. 14 rounds of 12ga and the ability to switch from buckshot to slug at any time is extremely valuable when you may need to reach out a bit further then across the yard. (Property in the country)

Congrats to the OP, sounds like a solid choice.
I have a 12 gauge Mossberg 590 for defense and a 2006 Remington 870 express for hunting and really like both for their intended roles, I trust them equally and haven't had issues with either one.
I would like to get 20 gauge for general use and it will most likely be a Maverick 88.

This. Cheap and pretty reliable. 870 express, Mossberg 500, Keltec KSG of you can find the funds and want the extra capacity.
28" barrel for home defense?
That way you can boop them without getting too close. LOL
It can be cut down to 20" and add a tube extension. Something I'd do with it.
Or buy a shorter barrel for it.
