Maverick 88 is the answer, and it is the only answer in its price range (less than $250) in my opinion. Also 12 gauge only, not 20 gauge. You can buy low recoil 12 gauge ammo if recoil is a concern, but you cannot find anywhere near the variety of ammo in 20 gauge.

Just go to online gun stores look up Mossberg Maverick 88's and look at the reviews from actual customers go to as many as you want to read about. Then go to youtube and watch reviews.
I do this a lot when I'm researching a firearm I'm interested in. Then I come here and ask.
These guys will give you a lot of information and feedback on a majority of firearms good or bad.

The Stevens 320 is made in China.
The Maverick 88 is made in Texas.

I looked into these and I decided against it when you can get a Maverick 88 which is one of the most reliable shotguns made, and it's American made.

Confirmed. Mine is loaded with 12 mini shells.

I had been wanting the maverick 88 for a few years but couldn't find 1 around here. A several few months back last year, i was at dunhams sports and seen some 12ga shotguns for $180, were $20 less if bought on Sunday or Monday. (Daughter was getting her first pistol Taurus G3C). Shotgun brand was Escort. It came in 18" or 20" length, 5+1 pump, standard buttstock or pistol grip. They only had the regular stock, so my daughter bought me 1 for my birthday. Boy was i surprised. It works really good, very easy to take apart and clean. I've since put close to 40 rounds thru it.

The next thing I am on the lookout for to add to my collection is a shotgun for home defense. Probably leaning towards a pump action with a pistol grip 20 gauge. Maybe a 12. And it would have to be on the inexpensive side. Really inexpensive. I am not experienced with shotguns but have been doing some research. Also, I’m not a big person so would need to be manageable.
I can’t believe I just missed the giveaway!!
Any suggestions for a good quality inexpensive shotgun?? Thanks

I would recommend the shotgun my wife has, a Remington 870 Tactical in 20 GA and getting a quality shotgun is an important thing, for reliability, as compared to a few cheaper one's.
I would also recommend having a shotgun with a butt-stock, over a pistol grip, for better accuracy.
The Remington 870 Tactical has an 18" barrel with a full-length magazine tube that is 'factory' and holds 7+1 rounds of shotshells. I replaced the 'adult' butt-stock with a 'youth' butt-stock (shortening the butt-stock by about 1.5" to a 13" LOP) making it much easier for the wife to shoulder and fire. I also added a shot-shell holder, mounted on the left side of the receiver as well as a tritium front sight so as to be able increase sight visibility in low / no light shooting situations.

There's not many of these running around anymore and you'll probably not find them used very often...which is usually a sign of good shotgun.

I do not recommend a pistol grip shotgun that does not have a buttstock. A pistol grip without a buttstock sends all recoil into the base of the thumb and can actually damage the hand. A bird's head grip doesn't do that nearly as severely.

My house shotgun is a 12ga 870 that I picked up for $100.00 from a friend that needed some money. I don't remember the barrel length but I only wanted it for home use. Mossburg makes a replacement barrel for the 870 that is cyl bore and 18 1/2." This was probably 20 years ago so it would probably be a bit more than the IIRC $110.00 I paid at the time. I would guess you could find an 870 used fairly cheap. Have fun looking. Jim.

Just checked MidwayUSA and they list the barrels for $140.00 but out of stock.
