Rat snake. One of the good guys. He's keeping your mouse population down. If it was me, I'd let him stay.
Thanks, that's what I assumed from looking at him and internet pics but always a good idea to get another opinion. I don't have any mice in my garage and I have several acres of woods adjoining my property in the back.. Not sure I want him living in the garage. He is parked in the bottom of the garage door and when I put it up to get the mower out the door dumped him in the driveway, it was a little unnerving for a moment. Hopefully he will vacate on his own if not I'll relocate him to the woods and hope he doesn't return.

    .
Probably cooler in your garage that outside, I have the same problem here. I check the outside of the door to see if they are waiting just outside and run them off before opening the door.

I appreciate all the input.. He was gone at 9 this morning but when I got back home about noon he was napping in the same spot as yesterday?? I guess I'll let him hang around since it appears putting him in the woods wouldn't solve the problem. Can't have another dependent around here without a name so he's going to be Rocky and as long as he doesn't mess with me and can live with being dumped when I get the mower out every week or so he can stay till he winters.

Definitely a beneficial snake to have around. Completely harmless to people even if you startled them. I've got some King snakes at my lake house that I see every now and then. A couple garter snakes in the woods and tons of water snakes obviously.

Also found a bullsnake nesting last year and it rattles its tail in leaves and sounds just like a real rattlesnake.
