The story has been repeated on several places on the internet, which neither proves nor disapproves its veracity.
It should be noted that booby traps are illegal, and that the setter could face criminal and civil charges.

Depends, while setting a booby trap is a level 6 felony in the IN code under controlled explosives. It would have to meet the definitions, if it's just a noisemaker it probably wouldn't.

    IC 35-47.5-2-2"Booby trap"
Sec. 2. "Booby trap" means a device meant to cause death or bodily injury by:
    (1) hiding the device; or
    (2) activating the device by trip wires, switches, antidisturbance, or other remote means.

On the criminal side- not necessarily. On the civil side...you can be sued for anything ot nothing at all.

    * * This is NOT Legal advice ** It is discussion of a topic of interest only. I am not your lawyer...unless I actually am.

Under Indiana law that makes doing something like this, intended only to scare someone off, not injury or kill, a crime.

"A person who knowingly or intentionally deploys a booby trap commits a Level 6 felony."

    Ind. Code § 35-47.5-5-10

"'Booby trap' means a device meant to cause death or bodily injury by:
    (1) hiding the device; or
    (2) activating the device by trip wires, switches, antidisturbance, or other remote means."

    Ind. Code § 35-47.5-2-2

Granted, if it ends up causing injury or death, you can count on law enforcement and prosecutors putting you in a position where your subjective intent, what the device was "meant" for, is a pretty important issue.

However, there's a pretty good argument to be made that a flashbang is specifically NOT intended to cause "death or bodily injury."

I will simply note that trip wires are VERY under appreciated.

Punji sticks are even more so.
