CSB. I heard the story on Mike Rowe's podcast a couple months ago. It blew me away. The video popped up on FB and reminded me of the amazing story.

    TLDR;
Reagan (D) had a radio program in the late 50s/early 60s; General Electric Theater. He was quite successful. But he was also going around to GE plants speaking against .gov policies under RFK. Bobby got wind of this and told GE that if they wanted their .gov contracts renewed, they needed to get rid of Reagan's show. After all, he couldnt have Ronnie talking bad about .gov that is run by his brother. If you talk bad about the gov, you are disrespecting the Kennedys. Talk about early wokeism. So GE did it.

So Reagan got ticked off at the democrat party and changed to Republican. He had extra time on his hands since he wasnt working. So he started writing a speech based on the talks he had been giving at the GE plants. Barry Goldwater called him to deliver a speech for him because he was such a well known and respected actor. So he gave this speech that he wrote.

And its still relevant today. Just replace Communists with woke socialists and its the same fight all over again.

    Speech:

Michael Reagan telling the story: (skip to 29:00. Its a 4 min listen. )

Just when did Reagan’s conversion begin? In 1969 he banned guns being carried in CA. And also legalized abortion for the state before roe vs wade. I’m not sure Reagan ever really converted. Just used another platform.

I've been reading Killing Reagan book and it has a lot of detail in the timeline of his life. I haven't picked up the book in awhile so would have to look to find the Kennedy connection. I do remember how he came to hate Communism and chuckled at the stories of his party days (not the political ones  )

Well, his administration was responsible for reinstating ammunition sales by mail, which had been banned by the '68 GCA. He signed the Gun Owners Protection Act into law. His administration's "Star Wars" program helped the Soviet crumble and helped lead to the Berlin Wall being torn down. He kept the Persian Gulf open during the Iran-Iraq war. He instituted the "War on Terror" and went after Libya when it was determined that they helped in the shooting down of an airliner full of 101st Airborne Division troopers. He supported anti-communists in South America. Need I go on?

If you like…. Raised taxes put us farther in debt. Signed the Brady Bill. I still waiting on my answer when did he “really” convert. He was a great speaker also. I just point out some things people can’t believe he did and why he would if he was really a convert.

I never have totally agreed with everything any Republican did or supports. In the real world, I never will.

Simple: When he left the Democrats, and registered and declared as a Republican, he was converted. The end. They are BOTH just a platform, and he only got to stand on one.

...and THERE is the problem when you have only two labels to apply, covering a multitude of issues. "Oh! I can't possibly support the 2nd Ammedment, I'm pro-choice!" "Well, I'd love to secure the border, but my... uh...sibling is LGBTXTZ, and really have to support him/her/they instead."

We reduce our choices to two boats, and if you get in one of them, you'd better pull the ore just like everyone else, and when the master says "Pull". Don't even think about evolving or maturing your position, or explaining your reasoning - they've invested way too much on honing the message and making it a big issue.

Regan was an actor, in LA. If I spent all my waking moments around the wack-job liberals he did, I might not want them carrying guns either.

A thought occurred to me. I used to think, like so many others, that George Orwell was right wing. He was a die-in-the-wool socialist /communist. He just happened to also be patriotic to a degree, and care about the future for mankind, and wrote things like Animal Farm and 1984, as a warning against the evil he saw growing.

The Economic Recovery Tax Act of 1981 lowered taxes for all individuals from top to bottom.
I believe the Brady Bill was signed into law in 1993.
I stand corrected, it was Clinton that signed it. In 1991, Republican hero Ronald Reagan wrote a New York Times op-ed making the case for the Brady bill. Reagan just wanted it done. The tax cuts as I remember were very slight for the common worker, and for major companies, which was good becasue they could invest and grow. However I remember those in higher income jobs that claimed they paid out way more in taxes. But that could of been after 1981 but before Bush 1. As for the debt.... Ronald Reagan was the first president to push debt accumulation into the trillions, contributing $1.86 trillion to what the U.S. owed during his term. 186%. Clinton was around 31% only because of Newt Gingrich (R) was able to balance the budget and keep Bill from spending more. A point I often have to correct (D) on when they try and take credit that Bill balanced it...he did not, was just a lame duck during that period. fullsizeoutput_7b3.jpeg

Yes, and this: Reagan's administration is the only one not to have raised the minimum wage. The inflation rate, 13.5% in 1980, fell to 4.1% in 1988. He was definitely anti-communist and put pressure on the Soviet Union which lessened tensions during his administration. As someone who was in West Berlin in the early 70's, the wall being brought down was a huge thing.

So if the inflation rate dropped as shown above is that not really better for all rather than just a slight increase in the minimum wage ?

Is the spending graph above comparing dollars spent with the inflation rate included ? If it is just dollars it is more misleading than if it was comparative to dollars with accounting for inflation.

So far how much has been spent in the two years of this administration ? Anyone know ?

One last question, we didn't have 5 billion dollars to spend on addng to the wall at the southern border and it was stopped because "they" wouldn't authorize the money. I wonder what we have spent trying to stop the invasion across the border and what we have spent housing, supplying phone, transporting, and medical care for those here illegally camping out in Texas and Arizona. We certainly have plenty of money to spend on that and money to give to Ukraine.

He also signed in the Hughs Amendment to the FOPA, barring any new machine guns being sold to civilians after 1986. And the NRA told him to sign it!
